The JUMO MIDAS S21 Ex (type 404710) is a compact, welded-system pressure transmitter for gases, vapours and liquids in potentially explosive areas, with a two-wire 4 to 20 mA output. It carries intrinsic safety Ex ib marking for device group II zones 1 and 2 and group III zones 21 and 22, and it builds on the sensor technology of the MIDAS series.

JUMO lists oil, fuel and natural gas, paint shops and paint robots, process technology, plant engineering, testing and laboratory technology, and chemical plants as areas of application. Ranges run from 0.25 to 100 bar relative and from 0.6 to 25 bar absolute, and static and dynamic measurements are both supported.

Choosing the version

Ex pressure transmitters are chosen by hazardous-area class first: confirm the zone, the gas or dust group and the temperature class against the Ex marking above, and match the ambient temperature to T4, T5 or T6. The supply must come from an intrinsically safe circuit, so an Ex-i repeater power supply or barrier is required; the supply range is narrower with the DNV extra code.

The order code builds from type 404710, the range (451 to 464 and 475 to 485 relative, 487 to 495 absolute, 998 and 999 special), output 405, process connection and electrical connection, and extra codes for the UKEX (085), DNV (062) and other options. Check which extra codes apply to M12 and line-socket versions.

Installation and use

Mount in any position; calibration is done upright with the process connection down. Because accuracy, long-term stability and overload are tabulated per range in the data sheet, select the range so the working pressure sits well inside the span. For viscous or crystallising media a standard seal-less measuring cell is not advisable; contact the manufacturer for a diaphragm seal solution.

The data sheet remarks that its application recommendations come from long experience but may not apply in every case.
