Where it fits and how it behaves
A 50 mm range is far beyond what barrel sensors offer, so this part is aimed at coarse position detection of big metal objects: container and skid movement, crane or gantry end zones, large gate or damper flags and heavy rail-mounted carriages. Because the switching frequency is only 0.1 kHz it is not intended for fast counting. The generous reach tolerates mounting play and thermal growth that would defeat a short-range sensor.
On site, check the free zone around the sensing face, use the correct tightening torque for the housing, and verify the output with the target at its real approach speed. Cable or connector damage and loose nuts are the usual causes of intermittent switching, so inspect them first during fault finding.
Reading the type code before you order
Reading the code against the datasheet rows (a derived summary, not Turck’s own key): the leading NI corresponds to the mounting condition shown as Non-flush, the digits to the rated switching distance of 50 mm, the housing token to the design Rectangular, CP80, the output suffix to 4-wire, Complementary contact, PNP, and the last element to the connection Connector, M12 × 1. Ident number 1569604 identifies this exact variant in the Turck catalogue.
A short checklist before you order: the target material and gap, the mounting condition (flush or non-flush) against the free zone around the sensor, the supply voltage and output type (PNP or NPN, NO or changeover) of your PLC input, and the connector type and cable length. Specifications here are restated from the official datasheet and should be matched against the current maker revision.
Key features in practice
- 50 mm rated switching distance from a non-flush CP80 face, giving generous clearance between sensor and moving target.
- Complementary PNP outputs (one normally open, one normally closed) on four wires, so a controller can monitor both states and detect wiring faults.
- Wide 10 to 65 VDC supply range, covering 24 VDC control systems and higher-voltage DC supplies on mobile or rail equipment.
- Short-circuit, reverse-polarity and wire-break protection.
- Green power LED and yellow switching LED for quick checks during alignment.
- M12 connector for fast replacement without rewiring the cable.
Getting the sensing distance right
The rated distance of 50 mm applies to a standard mild steel target of defined size. In practice, the reliable working distance is the secured operating distance of up to 0.81 × Sn, roughly 40 mm, and targets made of stainless steel, aluminium, brass or copper are detected at shorter distances because of their reduction factors. Targets smaller than the sensing face also reduce the range. A sound design places the target within the secured distance, with allowance for mechanical play and temperature drift (up to ±10%).
Mounting the sensor
Because the sensor is non-flush, the metal-free zone around the face matters. The mounting distances in the specification table (for example 3 × B to the side and 6 × Sn opposite) describe how far surrounding metal and neighbouring sensors must be kept. Placing two CP80 sensors side by side closer than these values can cause mutual interference. Use a rigid bracket so vibration does not change the gap, and keep the M12 cable strain-relieved.
Wiring the complementary outputs
With a 4-wire PNP changeover sensor, connect brown to positive, blue to 0 V, and the two output wires to separate PLC inputs. In normal operation exactly one input is on; if both are on or both are off, the PLC can raise an alarm for a broken cable or a failed sensor. Check the connector pin assignment on the Turck wiring diagram before terminating. The 0.1 kHz switching frequency suits slow positioning tasks rather than counting fast targets.
Use in Oman and GCC sites
Ports, steel yards, material handling and bulk loading facilities in the region benefit from large-range sensors that tolerate positioning variation in heavy equipment. The IP67 housing withstands dust and washdown, and the -25 to +70 °C ambient range covers most outdoor installations, though sensors on dark metal structures in direct summer sun should be shaded where possible.

About brand
Turck is a German manufacturer of sensors, connectivity and fieldbus technology for factory and process automation, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The family-owned group develops and manufactures sensors, connectors, interface technology and I/O systems.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Turck sensors and I/O devices for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.
Turck product series
Most of the Turck products here are inductive proximity sensors: threaded M12, M18 and M30 barrels in flush (BI) and non-flush (NI) versions, uprated-range (U) sensors, rectangular CP40 and CP80 housings and BIM magnetic-field sensors for detecting pistons in pneumatic cylinders. The type code describes the sensor; in BI5-M18-AP6X-H1141, BI means flush mounting, 5 is the switching distance in mm, AP6X a three-wire PNP output and H1141 the M12 connector.
Turck also makes RU ultrasonic sensors, PS pressure, TS temperature and LS level sensors, FCI inline flow sensors, the CMVT vibration and temperature sensor for condition monitoring over IO-Link, and fieldbus and Ethernet I/O modules and communication components.
Where Turck sensors are used
