Where it fits and what to check

Use it where IP cameras, vision sensors or multi-drop controllers need gigabit throughput in a small cabinet, or as an edge switch that feeds a fiber link back to a larger managed switch.

On the practical side, mounting is listed as din-rail mounting; wall mounting (with optional kit); the housing is metal; the stated MTBF is 2,823,446 hrs; the warranty period is 5 years. Treat the MTBF as a manufacturer prediction under its stated method, not a guarantee for your site.

What to confirm before ordering: the SFP module you plan to fit (it is ordered separately) and the temperature grade. Our team in Muscat works from the exact code on your enquiry, as an independent supplier.

Planning the network around a five-port gigabit switch

An unmanaged switch is chosen for simplicity, so the planning effort goes into the topology rather than into configuration. Count the devices that will connect to this cabinet now and allow for at least one spare port; with four copper ports and one combo port, the EDS-G205-1GTXSFP is best suited to small machine cells, camera clusters or a single panel that needs a clean gigabit uplink. Because the switch has no VLAN, redundancy protocol or traffic shaping settings, it should sit at the edge of the network, with segmentation and ring recovery handled by a managed switch further upstream.

  • Decide whether the uplink will be copper or fiber. Fiber is the better choice for long runs between buildings, across a substation yard or alongside power cables where electrical noise is a concern.
  • If fiber is chosen, select an SFP transceiver that matches the fiber type and distance at the other end, and confirm its compatibility and temperature range with the Moxa documentation.
  • Use the redundant dual power inputs by feeding them from two separate 24 VDC supplies where uptime matters, and wire the relay alarm contact to a PLC input so a lost supply is reported.
  • Check that devices with very large frames, such as some vision systems, stay within the published jumbo frame size.

Installation and first power-up

Mount the switch on the DIN rail with enough space around the metal housing for heat to escape, and keep it away from drive heat sinks and contactor coils in the same panel. Wire the removable 6-contact terminal block for both power inputs and the alarm relay before plugging it in, and check polarity even though reverse polarity protection is listed. Use shielded industrial Ethernet cable for runs near motors and drives, and terminate the shield according to the panel earthing scheme.

At power-up, check the port LEDs for link and speed on each connected device. Confirm that gigabit devices actually negotiate at gigabit speed; a link that falls back to a lower speed often points to a damaged cable pair or a poorly crimped connector. Label every port and record which device sits on it in the panel documentation.

Troubleshooting in service

Because there is no management interface, diagnosis relies on LEDs, the alarm relay and the connected devices. If a device drops off intermittently, swap its cable to a known good port to separate a port problem from a cabling problem. If the alarm relay changes state, check both power inputs first. For fiber uplinks, a link that will not come up is frequently caused by mismatched transceivers or dirty connectors, so clean the ferrules and confirm both ends use compatible modules.

Cabinet conditions in Oman and the GCC

The published operating temperature of -10 to 60°C applies to the air around the switch, and in sun-exposed outdoor cabinets in the region that limit can be reached in summer without cooling. Measure the internal cabinet temperature, use shading or ventilation where needed, and confirm the operating temperature range in the manufacturer datasheet. The IP30 rating means the switch relies on its enclosure for protection against dust and moisture, so mount it inside a sealed panel at desert, port and offshore-adjacent locations, and keep RJ45 and SFP ports capped when they are not in use to reduce corrosion from salty, humid air.

About brand

Since 1987 Moxa, based in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has built networking hardware for places where an office switch would fail: substations, wellhead panels, roadside cabinets. Seven Star LLC lists Moxa industrial Ethernet switches and fiber converters and supplies Moxa networking devices to system integrators and plant teams in Oman as an independent supplier. Each request is checked against the full Moxa model name before we quote.

Moxa switches and converters listed here

The EDS-G508E is a managed switch with eight Gigabit ports from the EDS managed line. The EDS-316-MM-SC-T is a 16-port unmanaged switch with 14 copper ports, two multi-mode SC fiber ports and the wide-temperature option (-40 to 75 C). The TCF-142-S-SC-T belongs to the TCF-142 series, which converts RS-232/422/485 serial signals to single-mode fiber. Moxa also makes serial device servers, protocol gateways, wireless devices and industrial computers, used on SCADA and telemetry networks across the GCC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Moxa EDS-G205-1GTXSFP?
Moxa lists it as: Unmanaged full Gigabit Ethernet switch with 4 10/100/1000BaseT(X) ports, 1 combo 10/100/1000BaseT(X) or 100/1000BaseSFP port, -10 to 60°C operating temperature. Five full Gigabit ports in a narrow DIN-rail housing, with one 10/100/1000T(X) or 100/1000BaseSFP combo port for a copper or fiber uplink.
What power supply does the EDS-G205-1GTXSFP need?
The Moxa specification gives an input voltage of 12/24/48 VDC; Redundant dual inputs. Check the terminal arrangement and, where relevant, the redundant-input wiring against your panel supply before ordering.
What operating temperature range applies to the EDS-G205-1GTXSFP?
The listed operating temperature is -10 to 60°C (14 to 140°F). Wide-temperature versions carry a -T suffix in Moxa's order codes where the series offers them, and they are separate order codes.
Does the EDS-G205-1GTXSFP need configuration?
It is an unmanaged switch: ports auto-negotiate speed and crossover, so it works as plug-and-play without software configuration, and any alarm or switch functions are set on the unit itself.
Where is the EDS-G205-1GTXSFP datasheet and how do I ask for a quotation?
