SICK IME12-08NPSZC0S M12 Inductive Sensor, 8 mm, PNP NO

Description

IME12 non-flush inductive sensor with 8 mm sensing range

The SICK IME12-08NPSZC0S (part no. 1040780) is an IME inductive proximity sensor with an M12 x 1 nickel-plated brass housing. It has a sensing range Sn of 8 mm (safe sensing range Sa 6.48 mm), a non-flush installation type, a PNP normally-open output and a plug-in M12 4-pin connector. The housing is 65 mm long with a 43 mm thread, and a PA 66 sensing face keeps the front sealed to IP67.

Two brass nuts are supplied, and the switching frequency of 2,000 Hz suits counting gear teeth and fast cams.

Reduction factors and mounting distances

The data sheet quotes reference reduction factors: steel St37 = 1, stainless steel approx. 0.8, aluminium approx. 0.45, copper approx. 0.4 and brass approx. 0.4. A non-ferrous target therefore reduces the working distance, so a sensor that reaches 8 mm on steel switches at about 3.2 mm on copper. Plan the target material into the mounting distance and keep a safety margin.

Non-flush sensors project the field beyond the face, which gives more range but needs free space around the head. The data sheet gives installation spacings as a drawing with values of 12 mm, 24 mm, 16 mm and 64 mm for neighbouring sensors and metal surfaces; consult it when mounting in a block or beside metal. Tighten the nuts to no more than 12 Nm.

Ordering information

Order IME12-08NPSZC0S, part no. 1040780. The data sheet confirms the features behind the code: M12 thread, 8 mm sensing range, non-flush installation, PNP output, normally-open function and an M12 4-pin connector. Confirm any alternative (flush, NPN, cable outlet) from the IME family page before ordering.

Key features at a glance

  • 8 mm rated sensing range from an M12 body, made possible by the non-flush (projecting) head.
  • PNP normally-open output, three-wire DC, up to 200 mA load current with a voltage drop of up to 2 V.
  • Switching frequency of 2,000 Hz for fast targets such as gear teeth, cams and indexing tables.
  • Short-circuit and power-up pulse protection built in.
  • IP67 nickel-plated brass housing with a PA 66 sensing face and an M12 4-pin plug.
  • Ambient range of -25 to +75 °C and an MTTFD figure of 1,735 years quoted in the data sheet.

Reading the type code

SICK type codes in the IME family describe the sensor in compact form. In IME12-08NPSZC0S, the 12 is the M12 thread size and 08 the sensing range in millimetres. The following letters cover the installation type, the output and switching function and the connection, which the data sheet confirms as non-flush, PNP, normally open and M12 connector. The part number 1040780 identifies this exact variant and is the safest reference for ordering.

Wiring

With a PNP output the sensor switches the positive supply to the load, which matches most current-sinking PLC inputs used in European and GCC panels. On a standard M12 4-pin connector for DC 3-wire sensors, brown is normally +V, blue 0 V and black the switching output; confirm the pin assignment in the SICK data sheet for this type before wiring. Use a matching M12 female cordset, and route sensor cables away from motor and VFD power cables.

Flush or non-flush?

Point Non-flush (this sensor) Flush alternative
Sensing range Larger for the same body size Shorter
Mounting Needs a free zone of non-metal around the head Can be embedded level in metal
Mechanical protection Head is exposed Face protected by the mounting metal

Choose this sensor when the extra range matters and the mounting allows clearance around the head.

Installation and maintenance

  • Set the working distance to no more than the safe sensing range Sa of 6.48 mm on steel, and reduce it further for non-ferrous targets using the reduction factors above.
  • Do not exceed 12 Nm on the nuts; overtightening can damage the housing.
  • Keep the face clear of metal chips and build-up, which can cause false switching, and check alignment after machine maintenance.
  • Protect the head from direct impact, as a non-flush face projects beyond the bracket.

Applications in Oman and GCC industry

M12 inductive sensors of this kind are used for position and presence detection on conveyors, packaging lines, bottling and water plants, cement and aggregate handling, and gate and valve position feedback. The IP67 rating handles wash-down and dust, and the upper ambient limit of +75 °C gives margin in hot machine areas, although sensors close to furnaces or direct sun should still be checked against the actual surface temperature.

What to include in an RFQ

State the type IME12-08NPSZC0S and part no. 1040780, the quantity, and whether matching M12 cordsets (straight or angled, and cable length) or mounting brackets are required.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
