Control, EMC and installation

The control card offers seven programmable digital inputs (terminals 18, 19, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33), two analog inputs selectable by software for voltage or current, two analog outputs, two relays rated 250 V AC 3 A resistive, and RS-485. Motor cables are limited to 50 m screened and 75 m unscreened for sizes up to 22 kW. With the internal C3 filter the design guide shows conducted emission compliance with a 5 m screened motor cable for J1 drives. Acoustic noise is typically 51 dBA at 1 m. The J1 fan speed is fixed.

For ambient temperature, the design guide states 45 °C at full continuous output, 50 °C for some power sizes and 55 °C with derating, with altitude derating above 1000 m. Check whether the load-sharing terminals suit your DC-bus plans before ordering.

Selection checks for a 2.2 kW heavy-duty drive

Start the selection from the motor nameplate rather than from the kilowatt figure alone. Compare the rated motor current at your supply voltage with the output current of this drive, and consider how the machine actually behaves: conveyors, extruders and draw benches can demand high torque at start or during jams, which is where the heavy-overload rating of this unit is useful. Check that the supply is three-phase within the 380-480 V band, that the motor is wired for that voltage, and whether a braking resistor will be needed for loads that decelerate quickly or overhaul the motor, since the brake chopper is built in but the resistor is a separate item.

Also decide early how the drive will be operated. Because this type code has no display and no embedded fieldbus, plan for set-up through an external LCP accessory or a PC tool, and for control through the digital and analog terminals or RS-485.

Mounting and wiring in the panel

The narrow J1 housing makes it easy to place several drives side by side on a back plate, but each unit still needs free space above and below for cooling air. Mount the drive vertically on a flat, conductive plate, connect the protective earth with a short, heavy conductor, and use the recommended fuses on the supply side. Use screened motor cable, terminate the screen at both ends with proper clamps, and keep motor cables apart from control and communication wiring. Where the load-sharing terminals are not used, leave them insulated and covered as described in the manufacturer documentation.

Commissioning steps

Enter the motor nameplate data, run the automatic motor adaptation if the application allows it, and set ramp times, speed limits and the current limit to suit the machine. Test start, stop and emergency-stop functions with the load uncoupled where possible, then repeat with the machine connected and watch the motor current during acceleration. Save the parameter set and keep a copy with the panel documents so that a replacement drive can be loaded quickly.

Operating environment in Oman and the GCC

Summer heat in Oman can push panel interiors beyond the ambient values in the design guide, so size panel cooling with the power loss of the drive in mind and consider the derating guidance before placing the unit in a hot enclosure. As an IP20 device, the drive must be installed inside a cabinet that keeps out dust and water. Fine desert dust on heatsinks and fans reduces cooling, so schedule regular cleaning with dry air and replace panel filter mats before they clog. The coated electronics of this version help where humidity or condensation is a concern, for example in coastal pump stations, but sealed enclosures and anti-condensation heaters remain good practice.

Maintenance

Inspect terminals for tightness, check the cooling fan for noise or dust build-up, and review the alarm log during planned stops to catch developing faults early.

About brand

From its headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark, where it was founded in 1933, Danfoss makes the drives, valves and sensors found in pump rooms, chiller plants and cold stores. Its blue VLT frequency converters are probably the most familiar of them.

Seven Star LLC lists Danfoss VLT drives, pressure transmitters, refrigeration valves and HVAC control valves, and supplies them to contractors and plant owners in Oman against the exact code number on the label.

Danfoss product families on this page

Among the VLT drives listed, three are each aimed at a different duty: the VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 for fans and building services, the VLT AQUA Drive FC 202 for water and wastewater pumping, and the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 for general industrial machinery. The LCP 12 control panel with potentiometer (code number 132B0101) is also listed; Danfoss specifies it for the VLT Micro Drive FC 51. In pressure measurement there are the MBS 3000 general purpose transmitter and the MBS 5100. Valves include the AB-QM pressure independent control valve in DN 15 to DN 250, the EVR 25 servo-operated solenoid valve and the ICV pilot-operated valve for industrial refrigeration.

Where Danfoss equipment is used

District cooling and chilled water plants, air handling units, booster and irrigation pump stations, desalination and wastewater works, ammonia and CO2 refrigeration plants, food storage and marine engine rooms are the usual places. Demand in the GCC is driven largely by cooling and water.

Ordering Danfoss parts: what we need

Every Danfoss product has a code number, and drives also carry a long type code string on the label. Send both. For a drive we need the motor power and current, the mains voltage, enclosure rating, any fieldbus or option card and the filter class. For an MBS transmitter give the pressure span, output signal, pressure connection and electrical connection. For valves give the size, connection type, coil voltage where relevant and the refrigerant or medium.
