Danfoss 131B0149 VLT AutomationDrive FC 302, 3 kW

Description

The 3 kW FC 302: a common 400 V motor size in the compact A2 frame

The 131B0149 is a Danfoss VLT AutomationDrive FC 302, type FC-302P3K0T5E20H2XGCXXXSXXXXAXBXCXXXXDX, rated 3.0 kW (4 hp). It uses the same A2 enclosure, graphical control panel and RFI filter as the 2.2 kW unit but carries the higher current rating of 7.2 A, which is the size most often paired with 4-pole 3 kW motors on 400 V networks. The drive is supplied as a standard unit without options, ready for the buyer to add a fieldbus, a relay card or an encoder interface in the option slots.

The higher output makes thermal planning more important than with the 2.2 kW version, because the estimated losses rise from 88 W to 116 W in the same enclosure.

Thermal, ambient and installation planning

The operating guide gives the full-current ambient limit as 45 °C, with 50 °C permitted at up to 90% of output current with typical motors and 55 °C only with derating; altitude is limited to 1000 m without derating and 3000 m with it. Humidity may be 5-95% non-condensing, and the coated board provides class 3C3 protection against aggressive gases. A-frame drives need 100 mm free air above and below, and the 3 kW drive in a warm panel in Oman should be checked against these derating rules rather than assumed to be rated at 50 °C.

Brake duty needs an external brake chopper solution, since this code has none. The Danfoss store page also shows an “Upgrade available” notice for this code, so confirm with us whether the current revision or a successor is being supplied.

Torque behaviour is described in the Danfoss FC 300 documentation: the drive can supply 160 percent torque for 60 seconds once in a ten minute period in high overload, while the variable torque rating allows 110 percent for up to 0.5 seconds. The guide quotes a torque rise time of 1 ms for flux control at 5 kHz and 10 ms for VVC+, which matters when sizing for sharp load steps.

Matching the 131B0149 to the motor and the load

Start the selection from the motor nameplate current, not only from the kilowatt figure. A 3 kW motor that draws close to or above the 7.2 A continuous rating at 400 V, or one running from a supply nearer the top of the voltage band where the rating falls to 6.3 A, may call for the next size up. Then look at the load profile. Conveyors, mixers and positive displacement pumps that need high starting torque suit the high overload rating, while centrifugal fans and pumps rarely need it.

  • Check whether the application regenerates energy, for example a hoist, an inclined conveyor or a high-inertia fan that must stop quickly. This type code has no brake chopper, so plan for that before ordering.
  • Decide which options the drive will need in its slots, such as a fieldbus card, extra relays or an encoder interface, and remember that an A or B option increases the depth to 220 mm.
  • Confirm whether the integrated RFI filter matches the earthing system of the installation; IT and corner-earthed networks often need special treatment, as described in the Danfoss operating guide.

Installation and commissioning steps

Install the drive vertically in the panel with the clearances given in the operating guide, and keep heat-sensitive equipment out of the hot air stream above it. Use screened motor cable, terminate the screen at both ends with proper clamps, and keep motor cables separated from control and signal wiring. Protect the supply with the fuse or breaker type given in the specification table.

For commissioning, enter the motor nameplate data through the graphical control panel, then run the automatic motor adaptation where the motor can be safely connected and is at standstill. Set ramp times that suit the mechanical system, select the control principle for the application, and check the direction of rotation with the load uncoupled where practical. Save a copy of the parameter set from the control panel so that a replacement drive can be loaded quickly.

Maintenance and fault finding

Most drive problems in service relate to heat, dust or connections. Inspect the heat sink and the cooling fan on a regular schedule, and clean them before the build-up of dust restricts airflow. Retighten power terminals during planned shutdowns. When the drive trips, record the alarm number and the operating conditions before resetting, and look it up in the operating guide; repeated overcurrent or overtemperature alarms usually indicate a mechanical problem on the driven machine, an undersized drive or a cooling issue in the panel.

Operating in Oman and GCC conditions

Panels in the region often run well above the 45 °C full-current ambient limit in summer, particularly in outdoor kiosks and plant rooms without air conditioning. Measure the internal panel temperature at the hottest time of day and apply the derating rules from the operating guide, or provide cooling, rather than relying on the nameplate alone. The IP20 chassis must be installed inside a suitable enclosure to keep out fine sand. The coated PCB helps in aggressive atmospheres such as water treatment, refineries and coastal plants, but condensation must still be avoided; anti-condensation heaters or controlled ventilation can help where humid sea air cools overnight inside the panel.

About brand

From its headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark, where it was founded in 1933, Danfoss makes the drives, valves and sensors found in pump rooms, chiller plants and cold stores. Its blue VLT frequency converters are probably the most familiar of them.

Seven Star LLC lists Danfoss VLT drives, pressure transmitters, refrigeration valves and HVAC control valves, and supplies them to contractors and plant owners in Oman against the exact code number on the label.

Danfoss product families on this page

Among the VLT drives listed, three are each aimed at a different duty: the VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 for fans and building services, the VLT AQUA Drive FC 202 for water and wastewater pumping, and the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 for general industrial machinery. The LCP 12 control panel with potentiometer (code number 132B0101) is also listed; Danfoss specifies it for the VLT Micro Drive FC 51. In pressure measurement there are the MBS 3000 general purpose transmitter and the MBS 5100. Valves include the AB-QM pressure independent control valve in DN 15 to DN 250, the EVR 25 servo-operated solenoid valve and the ICV pilot-operated valve for industrial refrigeration.

Where Danfoss equipment is used

District cooling and chilled water plants, air handling units, booster and irrigation pump stations, desalination and wastewater works, ammonia and CO2 refrigeration plants, food storage and marine engine rooms are the usual places. Demand in the GCC is driven largely by cooling and water.

Ordering Danfoss parts: what we need

Every Danfoss product has a code number, and drives also carry a long type code string on the label. Send both. For a drive we need the motor power and current, the mains voltage, enclosure rating, any fieldbus or option card and the filter class. For an MBS transmitter give the pressure span, output signal, pressure connection and electrical connection. For valves give the size, connection type, coil voltage where relevant and the refrigerant or medium.
