Rotork Fairchild Model 10 Pneumatic Precision Regulator

Description

The Rotork Fairchild Model 10 is a pneumatic precision pressure regulator for instrument air and control air lines where the outlet pressure has to stay put. Rotork’s datasheet gives a control sensitivity of 1/8 inch water column, which is what lets it serve as the supply regulator for positioners, transducers and other precision loops. A supply valve balanced by a rolling diaphragm keeps the output steady during wide supply swings, and an aspirator tube holds the setpoint as flow rises.

How the Model 10 holds its setpoint

The regulator works on a mechanical force balance. The range spring pushes the diaphragm assembly down, the supply valve opens and air passes to the outlet port. When downstream pressure reaches the setpoint, the force on the diaphragm balances the spring and the supply valve moves back toward its seat. A separate control chamber isolates the diaphragm from the main flow, which removes the hunting and buzzing seen in simpler designs, and the pressure-balanced supply valve stops supply pressure changes from shifting the setpoint.

Reading the catalog number and options

The catalog number is built from the model (102), a pressure range digit and a port size digit, followed by option letters. Port codes are 2 (1/4 inch), 3 (3/8 inch) and 4 (1/2 inch), and the range digit runs from 1 for 0-2 psig up to 9 for 5-400 psig. Rotork lists these option letters on the datasheet:

  • B low bleed, L low flow, D relieving with no bleed, N non-relieving, C internal check valve
  • E tapped exhaust, P panel mount, R plunger operated, S screwdriver adjust, T tamper proof
  • A silicone, J fluorocarbon, H BSPP threads, U BSPT threads, Y no yellow metals (must include J)

Not every option combines with every other one. The datasheet carries a compatibility chart, and low bleed or no-bleed choices reduce sensitivity. A mounting bracket kit, 09921 in zinc plated steel or 14523 in 316 stainless steel, is sold separately.

Where it fits and what to confirm

Typical duties are supply regulation for pneumatic instruments, loading controllers and precision test or calibration air. Where very low air consumption matters, compare it with the Rotork Fairchild Model 1000 no-bleed regulator. Before ordering, confirm the output range, port size and thread, the maximum supply pressure for the options you need, the elastomer for the media, and whether a legacy Fairchild catalog number needs to be matched.

About brand

Electric valve actuators are what most engineers picture when they hear the name Rotork, a company founded in 1957 and based in Bath, United Kingdom. Its catalog also reaches into pneumatic and hydraulic actuators, control valve actuators and instrument-air accessories.

Seven Star LLC lists Rotork actuators, positioners and precision regulators and supplies them to operators and valve shops in Oman, with the actuator build checked against the manufacturer's documentation.

Rotork product families on this page

The IQ3 is the intelligent multi-turn electric actuator for gate, globe and sluice valves, and the IQT3 is its part-turn counterpart for ball, butterfly and plug valves. For control valves there are the CVA and CMA electric actuators, built for continuous modulating duty. The Skilmatic SI3 is a self-contained electro-hydraulic actuator used where a fail-safe stroke is required. On the fluid power side the page lists GP/GH scotch yoke pneumatic and hydraulic actuators and the CP compact pneumatic quarter-turn unit. Two instrument brands sold under the Rotork name complete the list: Fairchild, with the Model 1000 no-bleed precision regulator, and YTC, with the YT-1000 electro-pneumatic and YT-3300 smart positioners.

Where Rotork actuators are used

Typical duties are isolation and block valves on pipelines and tank farms, motor-operated valves in refineries and power plants, sluice gates and large butterfly valves in water and wastewater works, and emergency shutdown valves on oil and gas facilities across the GCC.

Ordering Rotork actuators and parts: what we need

For an existing unit, send the serial number and the wiring diagram number from the nameplate; these two identify the exact build. For a new selection we need the valve type and size, torque or thrust, stem or shaft details, operating time, supply voltage, phase and frequency, the hazardous area certification, and any bus or remote control option. For pneumatic units add the air supply pressure and the fail position.
