Streamlight Stylus ATEX Zone 1 Penlight
Description
A slim aluminium penlight for Zone 1 inspection work
The Streamlight Stylus ATEX is the pocket penlight for technicians who need a light that fits a shirt pocket and still carries an ATEX marking. The machined aluminium case is only 0.95 cm across, weighs 31 g with batteries and runs on three AAAA alkaline cells. The white LED gives 11 lumens and 140 candela, with a 24 m beam distance, for 24 continuous hours to the 10% level.
It is a close-work tool: reading a nameplate inside a panel, checking a cable gland or a gauge face, looking into a junction box. The marking is II 2G Ex ia op is IIB T2 Gb, so it is a Zone 1 light rather than the Zone 0 rating of the larger Streamlight handheld models. A removable pocket clip, a knurled non-slip grip and momentary or constant switching complete the design.

What IIB and T2 mean for site use
Gas group IIB covers most common industrial gases such as ethylene but not hydrogen or acetylene, which need IIC. The T2 temperature class is a 300 C maximum surface temperature, so the light is suited to hydrocarbon areas where the ignition temperatures sit comfortably above that. If your classification drawing includes group IIC gases, step up to one of the IIC-rated ATEX lights in this range.
The fact sheet states that the Stylus family includes other colours and variants, among them blue, red, green, ultraviolet and infrared LEDs, but the ATEX item listed here is the white LED model in black. Its sibling the Stylus Reach adds a flexible cable for hard-to-reach spaces.
Using a penlight in a classified area
Pen-format lights are meant for close visual checks, not area lighting. Specify one per technician, add the Glare Guard to reduce glare from the lens on reflective surfaces, and keep spare AAAA cells in a safe area for changing, as intrinsically safe equipment must not have its batteries replaced in the hazardous zone.
Streamlight serialises every unit for positive identification, which helps with tool-control programmes and inspection records.
Typical tasks in oil, gas and process plants
The Stylus ATEX is best thought of as a personal inspection tool that stays with the technician through the shift. Instrument and electrical technicians use it to read nameplates and terminal markings inside panels and junction boxes, to check cable glands and gauge faces, and to look into tight corners of skids and process equipment where a larger handheld light is awkward. Mechanical inspectors use it to look at valve tags, flange markings and small leaks or residues, while operators on rounds carry it to check sight glasses and local indicators in poorly lit areas. Because the light is slim and light, it is easy to keep in a shirt pocket or coverall pocket without getting in the way when climbing ladders or working inside enclosures.
Selection considerations for hazardous areas
Choosing a light for a classified area starts with the site hazardous-area drawing, not with the light itself. Check the zone where the light will be used, the gas group of the substances present and the temperature class required, and compare them with the ATEX and IECEx marking shown on this page. The Stylus ATEX is a Zone 1 light for gas group IIB with a T2 temperature class, which suits many hydrocarbon areas but not every one. Where the drawing calls for group IIC or a stricter temperature class, a different ATEX light from the range is the right choice. It is also worth deciding at the outset whether the penlight is meant only for close checks, as it was designed, or whether crews actually need a larger handheld light for general area illumination; many sites issue both.
Tool control and inspection records
Every Stylus ATEX is individually serialised, which makes it straightforward to include in a tool-control register. Record the serial number when the light is issued, link it to the technician or crew, and include it in the periodic inspection of portable Ex equipment. During inspection, check that the case is undamaged, the knurled grip and pocket clip are intact, the lens is clean and the marking is still legible. A light with visible damage to the case should be withdrawn from use in hazardous areas until it has been assessed.
Working conditions in Oman and the GCC
Plants in Oman and the Gulf combine heat, fine dust and, near the coast, humid salty air. The aluminium case and IPX4 water resistance cope with splashes and normal outdoor use, but the light should not be left in direct sun on vehicle dashboards or hot steel surfaces between jobs. Wipe off dust and salt residue regularly so the grip and lens stay clean, and store the light in a cool, dry place when it is not being carried. Changing cells should always take place in a safe area, following the operating instructions attached to this page.
Documents and quotation
The attached Streamlight documents are the fact sheet and the information sheet with item numbers, and the operating instructions. Confirm the gas group (IIB) and temperature class (T2) are sufficient for your zone drawing, and that the white LED black model is the version required. Quote requests should carry the item number, quantity and the gas group of the zone. More lighting and electrical items are listed under Electrical & Power.

Streamlight product series
ATEX and IECEx rated flashlights include the 2AA and 2AAA ProPolymer HAZ-LO for zone 0, the Dualie 3AA family with dual beam, laser and Color-Rite versions and the rechargeable Dualie, the Survivor, Survivor X and Survivor Pivot right-angle lights, and the Stylus and Stylus Reach penlights for zone 1. Headlamps include the 3AA HAZ-LO and Enduro Pro HAZ-LO.
Lanterns and area lights include the Vulcan 180 HAZ-LO rechargeable lantern for zone 0, the Vulcan LED for zone 2, the E-Flood LiteBox, the Super Siege lantern and the Syclone magnetic work light for unclassified areas.
Where Streamlight lights are used
Inspection and maintenance in refineries, gas plants, tank farms and offshore facilities, confined space entry, emergency response and general plant work. Marking, zone, gas group and temperature class differ by model and by the battery fitted, so the certificate and product label must match the area classification.
Ordering Streamlight lights: what we need
Send the five-digit item number with the charger voltage or plug type, colour and quantity. For hazardous-area lights state the zone, gas group and temperature class required, because item numbers vary by certification, voltage and package.
