EUCHNER RPS-M-2131SR175M Emergency Stop Rope Pull Switch

Description

Emergency stop along the whole length of a conveyor

The EUCHNER RPS-M-2131SR175M (order no. 171992) is a rope pull switch with an emergency stop function and a die-cast aluminium housing. Instead of one pushbutton in reach of one operator, a steel rope runs alongside a conveyor, belt line or machine and can be pulled at any point to stop it. The switch has a latching mechanism and a pull-to-reset button, so after a trip the machine can be restarted only after the rope has been re-tensioned and the switch reset on the device.

The device has a centre position and two switch-off positions: pulling the rope or a rope break moves it to a switch-off position, so a slack or broken rope is detected as a stop command. A window shows the rope tension. This version uses a thimble for the pull wire and an actuating force of 175 N, and it follows EN ISO 13850 and EN 60947-5-5 for emergency stop devices.

Installing the rope

EN ISO 13850 requires emergency stop devices to be reachable and operable by people at risk, and a tensioner spring on the counter bearing so the switch responds to a pull from either direction at any point on the rope. The rope is clamped at the switch and the spring, and supported on eyebolts spaced at regular intervals; EUCHNER offers rope pulley blocks for direction changes of up to 90 degrees. According to the operating instructions, depending on the switch version a rope length of up to 75 m is possible, and the RPS-M metal types are suitable for closed rooms and outdoors.

Accessories listed for this device include eyebolts (RPS-O-8-50/V5), rope sets with thimble and clamp (RPS-RS/V5), tensioner springs (RPS-W-100/175), turnbuckles (RPS-B-6-60/V5 and RPS-B-6-110), tensioning rope in 50 m and 100 m lengths, pulley sets, a built-in LED (AY-LED-024-GR/RD-M) and a housing cover. Variants with a quick-release clamping head and plug connectors are also available.

Documents and quotation

EUCHNER’s operating instructions for RPS rope pull switches, which describe mounting, rope tensioning and wiring, are available from the official product page linked in the Datasheet & Documentation section below. How the EUCHNER RPS-M-2131SR175M rope pull switch works

A rope pull switch converts a pull on a long steel rope into a safe stop signal. The rope is fixed between the switch and a tensioner spring and pre-tensioned so that the actuator sits in its centre position, where the positively driven safety contacts are closed and the machine can run. If anyone pulls the rope at any point along its length, the actuator moves to a switch-off position and the safety contacts are forced open. If the rope breaks or goes slack, the spring tension is lost and the actuator moves to the other switch-off position, which also opens the contacts. In both cases the switch latches, and the machine can only be restarted after the cause has been checked, the rope re-tensioned and the pull-to-reset button operated at the switch.

The 2131 switching element has three positively driven contacts and one NO contact, and uses slow-action switching. The positively driven contacts are typically wired into a safety relay or safety controller, while the NO contact can be used for signalling, for example to a PLC or indicator.

RPS-M-2131SR175M selection guide

This variant is chosen when a metal-housed rope pull switch with a thimble rope connection and 175 N actuating force is needed. When planning, consider the total rope length, the number of switches needed (single-ended with a spring, or two switches at both ends of a longer rope), whether direction changes need pulley blocks, and whether a built-in LED indicator should be fitted. The order number 171992 identifies this exact configuration; variants with quick-release clamping heads and plug connectors exist for other installation needs.

  • Belt conveyors and transfer lines: rope along the walkway side so it is reachable along the full length.
  • Outdoor and dusty areas: die-cast aluminium RPS-M types with IP67.
  • Status signalling: optional built-in LED AY-LED-024-GR/RD-M.

Installation and maintenance

Mount the switch and counter bearing rigidly, fit eyebolts at regular intervals so the rope cannot sag, and use the tension window to set the rope to the centre position. Test the stop function by pulling the rope at several points and by simulating a slack rope, and confirm that the machine cannot restart until the switch is reset. Inspect the rope, clamps, springs and eyebolts at regular intervals and repeat the functional test as required by your risk assessment and maintenance plan. Always follow the EUCHNER operating instructions and applicable standards.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the GCC, rope pull emergency stop switches are used on belt conveyors in mining and quarrying, cement plants, ports and bulk terminals, logistics and packaging lines, and in food and manufacturing plants. The IP67 die-cast housing and -30 to +80 °C ambient rating suit dusty and hot environments, including outdoor installations.

About brand

EUCHNER is a German manufacturer of safety switches, guard locking systems and safety controls for machine safety, founded in 1940 and headquartered in Leinfelden-Echterdingen near Stuttgart. The family-owned company is best known for its guard locking and transponder-coded safety switches.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list EUCHNER safety components for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

EUCHNER product series

Guard locking switches include the transponder-coded CTP, CTA and CTS series, the CTM with BiState guard locking, the STP twin switch and the electromechanical TX1B and TZ series. The MGB2 Multifunctional Gate Box combines guard locking, handle and control elements on one door. Non-contact switches include the CES-IA set and the CES-AP RFID safety switch, and the CTP-I version provides monitoring without guard locking.

Control devices include the ZSM and ZSB three-position enabling switches, the RPS emergency stop rope pull switch, the ESM safety relays (including versions with time-delayed contacts and the ESM-TE301 expansion) and the MSC modular safety controller.

Where EUCHNER components are used

Safety guards and doors on machine tools, robot cells, presses, packaging machines and conveyor systems, emergency stop along conveyors and enabling during setup and teaching. A switch or actuator is one part of a safety function; the complete system must be designed and validated for its application.
