Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 Heat and Cooling Energy Calculator
Description
Overview
The Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 is a general-purpose energy calculator that works as a heat meter, cooling meter or combined heat/cooling meter together with one or two flow sensors and two or three temperature sensors. Under EN 1434 and the MID it is a calculator with its own type approval, so it can be supplied on its own for connection to an existing flow meter, or as a complete meter with Kamstrup ULTRAFLOW flow sensor and matched temperature sensors. Beyond billing, it can be used for leak monitoring, permanent performance monitoring, power and flow limiting with valve control, and energy measurement in open and closed systems.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 to district cooling providers, MEP contractors, hospitals, campuses and industrial plants in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Where a compact meter is too small, for example on a building connection to a district cooling main, this calculator provides the input flexibility and communication options that energy transfer stations need.
Measurement Principle
The Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 integrates thermal energy from the volume flow and the temperature difference between supply (t1) and return (t2). Volume arrives as pulses from the flow sensor on input V1, with a second input V2 available for a second flow sensor; the pulse figure is programmable from 0.001 to 300 pulses per litre and the nominal flow from 0.6 to 15,000 m³/h. Temperatures come from Pt100 or Pt500 sensors to EN 60751, in 2-wire or 4-wire connection. The approved range is 2 to 180 °C with a temperature difference of 3 to 178 K, and the meter measures down to 0.01 K without a low-temperature cut-off.
Kamstrup quotes a typical calculator accuracy of ±(0.15 + 2/ΔΘ) %, well inside the EN 1434-1 limit of ±(0.5 + ΔΘmin/ΔΘ) %. When the Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 is combined with an ULTRAFLOW X4 sensor, Auto Detect matches the pulse figure and qp automatically, so a flow sensor can be exchanged without reconfiguring the calculator.
Engineering Design of the Kamstrup MULTICAL 603
The Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 calculator weighs 450 g, is rated IP65 and is designed for indoor installation at 5 to 55 °C in a non-condensing location. It can be mounted directly on the flow sensor or on a wall bracket; for media below ambient temperature, which is the normal case in chilled water, Kamstrup recommends wall-mounting. Nine calculator types cover the combinations of Pt100 or Pt500, 2-wire or 4-wire, one or two flow inputs, a third temperature input t3, 24 V active pulse inputs (type 603-G) and a backlit display (type 603-F). Type 603-M is a mixed fluid version that calculates energy from -40 to 140 °C for glycol systems under EN 1434, without MID approval.
Power comes from a D-cell lithium battery with up to 16 years’ life when wall-mounted, a 2 x A-cell pack, a D-cell IoT battery, or 230 VAC or 24 VAC/VDC supply modules with a supercap backup against short interruptions. Two module slots in the Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 accept a wide range of communication and I/O modules. The Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 can be reconfigured after installation through the front keys, READy or METERTOOL HCW.

- PQT Controller module for power and flow limiting through valve control.
- Info logger storing 250 info codes, with the latest 50 visible in the display.
Industrial Applications
District cooling is the defining use of the Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 in the Gulf. At each building energy transfer station, the calculator takes pulses from a large ultrasonic or electromagnetic flow meter on the primary side, reads a pair of 4-wire Pt500 pocket sensors, and reports cooling energy to the billing system while a second module feeds the building BMS over BACnet or Modbus. The same arrangement serves chiller plants in hospitals, universities, airports and government complexes in Muscat, where the operator needs to verify plant output against electrical input.
Industrial users in the Sohar, Duqm and Salalah zones apply the calculator to process cooling loops, heat recovery systems and glycol circuits, using analog inputs to bring pressure or other signals into the same data logger. Seven Star LLC supplies the Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 with the right calculator type, sensors and modules for each site, and provides the Kamstrup data sheet for consultant approval.

About brand
Ultrasonic measurement with no moving parts is the idea behind the flowIQ water meters and ultrasonic energy meters of Kamstrup. The Danish company, founded in 1946 in Skanderborg, makes meters for water, heat and cooling that are read remotely. Seven Star LLC lists the Kamstrup flowIQ water meters and the MULTICAL 403 energy meter, and supplies Kamstrup meters to utilities, district cooling operators and building owners in Oman and the GCC.
Kamstrup meter families on this page
The flowIQ 2200 is an ultrasonic smart water meter for residential, multi-unit and commercial connections. The flowIQ 4200 is the bulk water meter, made in five sizes from DN125 to DN300. The MULTICAL 403 is an ultrasonic thermal energy meter that can be supplied as a heat meter, a cooling meter or a combined heat and cooling meter, with a matched pair of temperature sensors and communication modules.
Ordering Kamstrup meters: what we need
Send the type number from the meter front if you are matching installed units. Otherwise give nominal flow and pipe size, connection type and meter length, heat or cooling service, where the flow sensor sits (supply or return pipe), the temperature sensor type and cable length, and the communication you need, for example wired M-Bus or a radio option.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Its two flow inputs accept Kamstrup ULTRAFLOW sensors as well as flow sensors with reed contacts, FET contacts, fast or slow electronic pulses or 24 V active pulses. The pulse figure is programmable from 0.001 to 300 pulses per litre and the nominal flow from 0.6 to 15,000 m³/h, which allows the use of large electromagnetic or ultrasonic flow meters with a pulse output.
The calculator is approved as a cooling meter (TS 27.02 012) and as a bifunctional heat/cooling meter, and it supports 4-wire Pt100 or Pt500 pocket sensors with cable lengths up to 100 m. These options suit plant rooms and energy transfer stations, where sensors and flow meter are often some distance from the calculator.
There are two module slots. Options include wired M-Bus, Wireless M-Bus and linkIQ, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, BACnet MS/TP, BACnet IP, LON, 2G/4G network, NB-IoT, analog outputs, analog inputs and pulse inputs or outputs, so a meter can, for example, report to the BMS over BACnet and to a billing system over M-Bus at the same time.
The 603-M variant is a mixed fluid meter that calculates energy in the range -40 to 140 °C according to EN 1434, without MID approval. It is intended for systems that use a water and glycol mixture, where a standard water-based calculation would give the wrong result.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 to district cooling operators, MEP contractors and industrial users in Oman and the GCC. Our team in Muscat helps match calculator type, sensors, flow input and communication modules to the project and provides the official data sheet.
