VEGA VEGACAP 64 PTFE Insulated Capacitive Rod Level Switch

Description

A fully insulated rod for non-abrasive, viscous and adhesive products

The VEGACAP 64 is a point level sensor for non-abrasive liquids and bulk solids with a fully insulated capacitive rod electrode, which VEGA says makes it suitable for viscous and adhesive products. Its optimised design gives reliable measurement even with strong buildup, and VEGA presents the reduced number of cleaning cycles as a main benefit. The rod is fully PTFE insulated and up to 4 m long, with a process rating of -1 to +64 bar and -50 to +200 °C, so the sensor can be used where the partly insulated VEGACAP 62 would be bridged by a conductive film.

Buildup and cleaning

VEGA’s selling points for the 64 are insensitivity to buildup and a reliable switching point in strongly adhesive media, which reduces cleaning cycles in plants handling pastes, resins and slurries. The fully insulated rod separates the sensor from conductive products, so the measurement is not shorted by a conductive film on the probe. In adhesive products the product information advises that the probe should protrude into the vessel (horizontal installation) and sockets for flanges or threaded fittings be avoided.

Selection against the 62 and 63

The VEGACAP 62 is partly insulated for dry solids and oils, the VEGACAP 63 is a general-purpose fully insulated rod (PTFE or PE) with a two-wire output, and the VEGACAP 64 is the one built for sticky products. If the vessel is plastic or lined, mention it so a suitable reference electrode is quoted. Provide rod length, thread or flange, voltage and output type with your enquiry, and confirm any Ex approvals with the manufacturer.

The sheet lists the same electronics as the other VEGACAP rod types except that the contactless electronic switch version operates from 20 to 253 V AC or DC with a load current of 10 to 400 mA, so one version can be used for both 24 V DC and 230 V AC control circuits. Housing choices are plastic, stainless steel or aluminium with protection up to IP67, and the shortenable rod allows stocking of standard lengths that are cut to size at the vessel.

About brand

VEGA is a German maker of level and pressure instruments. Bruno Grieshaber founded the company in 1959 in Triberg in the Black Forest, and it has been based in Schiltach since 1975, still family owned as VEGA Grieshaber KG. VEGA is best known for radar level sensors: it introduced the first two-wire radar level sensor in 1997 and the first 80 GHz radar sensor for bulk solids, the VEGAPULS 69, in 2015.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing VEGA radar and guided wave radar transmitters, point level switches, pressure transmitters and signal conditioning instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Sensors are matched from the product code on the type label.

Where VEGA instruments are used

VEGA radar sensors measure level in crude oil and product tanks, separators, chemical reactors, cement and aggregate silos, grain stores and water reservoirs. Compact cable radars are widely used in wastewater pumping stations and flood monitoring. Because 80 GHz radar focuses a narrow beam, it can measure past internal structures in a tank, and it is not affected by the temperature, pressure or vapour above the product, which suits hot Gulf storage tanks.

Ordering VEGA instruments: what we need

The product code on the type label (for example PS64.XXXXXXX) fixes the measuring range, antenna or probe, process connection, electronics and approvals. Send it with the serial number. For a new measurement add the medium and its dielectric constant if known, tank or silo height and internals, process pressure and temperature, process connection, output (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS PA, Modbus or IO-Link), and any hazardous-area or overfill protection approval required.
