SICK RT-P3231 ZoneControl Background Suppression Sensor

Description

ZoneControl sensor for zero-pressure accumulation conveyors

The SICK RT-P3231 (part no. 1063131) belongs to the ZoneControl range, which SICK designed for zero pressure accumulation on roller conveyors. It is a photoelectric proximity sensor with background suppression, infrared light and a sensing range of 60 mm to 900 mm. The slim 20.6 mm by 99.2 mm by 48.9 mm ABS housing mounts alongside the conveyor and detects cartons or totes over a wide range.

Output is PNP with light/dark switching and an M12 4-pin connector. A nine-turn potentiometer sets the distance.

Zero pressure accumulation explained

On an accumulating roller conveyor, each zone has its own drive and sensor. The sensor detects a carton in its zone, and the controller stops the upstream zone so cartons do not push against one another. RT-P3231 supplies the presence signal for such a zone with its wide 900 mm window and background suppression to ignore the conveyor structure.

The sensor is a single sensor type, but the data sheet shows a pin assignment table for the ZoneControl family with several output and alarm variants. For this type, the data sheet lists PNP output and light/dark switching, so match the wiring to the pin table of RT-P3231 and not to a sibling.

Ordering note

Order as RT-P3231 with part no. 1063131. The ZoneControl product page on sick.com shows other variants (different outputs, NPN versions and alarm functions), so confirm the exact type with the PLC or controller supplier before ordering.

Why background suppression suits roller conveyors

A diffuse sensor that simply measures reflected light can be fooled by a bright conveyor side frame, a shiny roller or a white wall on the far side of the line. Background suppression works differently: the sensor evaluates the position of the returned light spot and switches only for objects inside the set distance. Anything beyond that distance is ignored, even if it is more reflective than the carton. For conveyors that carry dark plastic totes next to white boxes, this makes switching far more consistent than plain energetic diffuse sensing.

Setting the switching distance

The nine-turn potentiometer gives fine resolution across the 60 to 900 mm range. A practical routine is:

  1. Mount the sensor on the side frame, aimed across the zone at the height of the smallest product.
  2. Place the darkest typical product at the far edge of where it can travel and turn the potentiometer until the output switches.
  3. Remove the product and confirm the output does not switch on the opposite frame or background.
  4. Repeat with the lightest and most glossy product to make sure both are detected.

Choose light or dark switching to match the logic the zone controller expects, so that a detected carton produces the signal the program is written for.

Wiring and integration

The RT-P3231 uses a standard M12 4-pin male connector, a 10 to 30 V DC supply and a PNP output that can source up to 100 mA, which suits the 24 V DC inputs of PLCs, distributed I/O blocks and conveyor zone cards. With a 2 ms response time and 250 Hz switching frequency, the sensor is fast compared with typical conveyor speeds. Use pre-made M12 cables with a rating appropriate to the environment, and route them away from motor and roller drive cables.

Mounting and care

  • Fix the slim ABS housing firmly so belt or roller vibration does not change its aim.
  • Keep the front window clean; dust and cardboard fibres reduce the received light.
  • Avoid aiming the sensor into strong direct sunlight from loading dock doors.
  • Re-check the switching distance after any mechanical change to the conveyor.

Warehouses and distribution centres in the GCC

Accumulation conveyors are used in e-commerce fulfilment, airport baggage handling, retail distribution and pharmaceutical logistics across Oman, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The IP67 rating and the operating range down to -40 °C and up to +60 °C cover both air-conditioned buildings and warmer semi-open loading areas. Fine dust is the main maintenance issue, so include sensor windows in routine cleaning.

Documents and quotation

This page links the original SICK data sheet for RT-P3231 (part no. 1063131). Values in the specification table were copied from that document. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK products as an independent supplier in Muscat; send your request with the exact type and part number, the quantity and the delivery point, and mention any need for clamps, reflector or a cable with connector. Please verify the details with us before placing an order, since the manufacturer may change data without notice. See also sensors and transmitters and the SICK WTB4-3 miniature photoelectric sensor.

Before ordering, compare the type code and part number on your existing unit or drawing with the details on this page, and confirm supply voltage, output type, connector and mounting against the data sheet. Send the nameplate details with your enquiry and we will check them against the manufacturer data before quoting.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
