Types of hydrostatic level transmitter in this category
Submersible level probes such as the JUMO MAERA S25, S26, S28, S29 and F27, VEGA VEGAWELL 52, KELLER Series 26Y and 36XW, Mobrey 9710 and the Trafag EXNAL 8858 and 8859 explosion-proof versions hang on a cable in wells, tanks and lift stations. Flange-mounted transmitters like the Rosemount 3051L and 3051SAL measure level in process vessels, and the Anderson-Negele L3 serves hygienic tanks.
How to select a hydrostatic level transmitter
Define the measuring range in metres of water, liquid density, temperature and cable length. Choose cable materials (PE, PUR, FEP) and sensor housing (stainless steel, titanium, ceramic) for the medium. For pressurised vessels use a differential or flange-mounted transmitter. Specify output, accuracy and hazardous area approval.

It measures the pressure of the liquid column above it. Dividing by density and gravity gives the level height.
Why do submersible probes have a vented cable?
The vent tube references the sensor to atmospheric pressure, so barometric changes do not affect the level reading.
Does liquid density affect the reading?
Yes. The transmitter must be scaled for the density of the liquid, or compensated if density changes.
How is level measured in a pressurised tank?
With a differential pressure transmitter or flange-mounted level transmitter that subtracts the vapour space pressure.
