MEDC

MEDC is a British brand of alarm, signalling and control equipment for hazardous areas, designing and building products for flammable atmospheres and harsh conditions since 1975. It is now part of Eaton, whose Crouse-Hinds hazardous-area portfolio includes the MEDC range alongside the Fulleon and Wheelock signalling brands. MEDC sounders, beacons and call points are used offshore, in refineries and on railways. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing MEDC explosion-protected beacons, alarm sounders, call points and junction boxes for fire and gas systems in Oman and the GCC.

MEDC product families on this page

Visual signals include the XB15 xenon beacon, the LD15 LED beacon and the SM87 beacon family with its SM87LED version, for Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas. The DB3 is the alarm sounder. Manual alarm devices are the BG manual call point and a manual release unit from the BG2 call point series, listed as BG2E. The SM87JB junction box completes the field wiring. These devices are ordered with long codes such as SM87BGLAD1T1B1NNRAS or BGEB4B6B1DDCF7R, in which each block of characters selects an option.

Where MEDC signaling equipment is used

MEDC beacons and sounders announce fire, gas and process alarms on production platforms, in gas plants, refineries, chemical plants, loading terminals and marine vessels. Call points give personnel a way to raise the alarm by hand, and the same devices are wired into fire and gas panels from many system builders.

Ordering MEDC beacons and call points: what we need

The complete order code from the label or the project datasheet is the best starting point. If you are selecting from scratch, send the supply voltage, lens color for beacons, tone and sound level for sounders, enclosure material and finish color, cable entry size and number, the certification required and the ambient temperature. For call points add the switch arrangement, any series or end-of-line resistor values, and label or duty plate text.

Facts checked against Eaton's alarms and signalling pages and the MEDC catalogue, October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read a MEDC order code?
MEDC devices are configured to order, and the code strings the choices together: product family first, then blocks for certification, voltage, enclosure and color, cable entries, lens color or switch arrangement and other options. Because the same family exists in many variants, copy the whole code from the certification label or the project datasheet instead of quoting only the family name.
Which hazardous area approvals do MEDC beacons and sounders carry?
The listed MEDC devices are built for Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas and carry ATEX marking, and the manufacturer also lists IECEx certification for families such as the SM87LED. The approval is part of the order code. State the scheme your site requires, the gas group and the temperature class, and we will check the certificate for that exact version.
What should I specify for a MEDC manual call point?
Give the operating type (break glass or push button), enclosure material and color, the number and type of switch contacts, the values of any series and end-of-line resistors your fire and gas panel needs, cable entries, lift flap or other mechanical options and the wording of the duty label. An existing unit's order code covers all of these points.
My device is labeled Cooper MEDC. Is it the same product as Eaton MEDC?
MEDC signaling equipment has carried the Cooper MEDC and Eaton MEDC names at different times, so labels differ with the age of the unit. The family names, such as XB15, SM87, DB3 and BG, continued through those changes. Send the full code and the certificate number from the label and we will check the present equivalent in the manufacturer's documentation.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of MEDC?
No. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier that sources MEDC beacons, sounders and call points through commercial channels. We check the order code against the manufacturer's documentation, propose the manufacturer's successor when a model is obsolete, and provide the datasheet and the certificates the manufacturer issues with the order on request.
