Bender EDS440-L-4 ISOSCAN Insulation Fault Locator
Description
Locating the first earth fault while the plant keeps running
The Bender EDS440-L-4 is an ISOSCAN insulation fault locator for unearthed DC, AC and three-phase systems (IT systems). It forms an EDS system together with a locating current injector, for example the integrated injector of an iso685-D-P ISOMETER, and external measuring current transformers. The injector sends a locating current into the faulted circuit; the EDS440 detects that signal through the transformers on each feeder and shows which of up to twelve measuring channels carries the fault. According to the datasheet, AC and three-phase systems from 42 to 1000 V and DC systems from 24 to 1500 V can be monitored, depending on the injector.
The EDS440-L-4 (article number B91080202) is the version with an AC/DC 24 to 240 V supply and LED display for the channels; the EDS440-S-1 (B91080201) has a DC 24 V supply and no LED display, and the EDS440-LAF-4 is for CTAF transformers. The W option adds increased shock and vibration resistance and conformal varnish. The EDS441 in the same datasheet is the more sensitive sister device.

How an EDS system is built
An EDS system has three parts: a locating current injector (often the P version of an ISOMETER), one or more EDS44x fault locators, and the current transformers around each outgoing circuit. When the ISOMETER reports a fault, the injector is enabled; the EDS evaluates the locating signal on each transformer and the faulty channel is indicated on the device, on the iso685 display or over the bus. EDS and ISOMETER communicate on the BS bus, and the EDS440 can also report a plain residual current in the range 0.1 to 20 A. Faulty or interrupted transformer connections are detected by the transformer monitoring function.
Selection notes
- EDS440 (2 to 10 mA) is for general industrial systems; EDS441 (0.2 to 1 mA) is the high-sensitivity variant for smaller leakage currents.
- Choose the supply: L versions take AC/DC 24 to 240 V, S versions take DC 24 V and are powered over the BB bus.
- Transformers listed by Bender for the EDS440 include CTAC20, CTAC35, CTAC60, CTAC120 and CTAC210 (article numbers B98110005 to B98110020).
- Accessories: DI-1PSM repeater (B95012044), DI-2USB converter (B95012045) and IOM441-S relay module (B95012057).
- Use the W option for increased shock, vibration and moisture stress.
Typical GCC uses
Fault location is valuable on installations where an earth fault must be found without shutting down: control rooms, drilling and compressor skids and marine auxiliary supplies. For ISOMETERs that feed the EDS, see the iso685-D-P on this site and the relays category.
Selection and installation notes
Insulation and residual current monitoring devices are selected from the system type (IT, TN or TT), the system voltage, the leakage capacitance and the alarm levels needed. Connect the device to the system and to earth as the manual shows, set the response values from the system design, check the coupling or measuring current transformer and its wiring, and test the alarm and relay outputs after commissioning. Do not do an insulation test of the plant with the monitor connected unless the manual allows it.
Information needed for a quotation
Send the full model code, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, the intended use and any accessories needed, so that the complete package can be quoted together.
Documents and supply information
The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with the project specification and the site risk assessment before a purchase is confirmed. Ratings, standards and dimensions are quoted as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.
