VEGA VEGACAP 65 Capacitive Cable Level Switch up to 32 m

Description

A cable electrode switch for tall silos with a transistor output

The VEGACAP 65 hangs a partly insulated capacitive cable electrode of up to 32 m into a tall vessel to give a point level signal for bulk solids and liquids. VEGA calls the construction proven with high functional safety, the probe can be shortened on site, and the whole probe length is available for switching because there is no blocking distance. The sheet covers the transistor (NPN/PNP) version: a 10…55 V DC supply, maximum 0.5 W, a load current below 400 mA, a switching voltage below 55 V DC, a blocking current below 10 µA and a 0.7 s switching delay.

Placing a point level far from the roof

A cable electrode lets one instrument sense a limit at any depth inside a tall silo or deep tank, from a nozzle in the roof; the switching point is then adjusted on the electronics. Because the cable carries a tensile load from the weight of the product, VEGA’s mounting instructions require the roof load and the tensile load of the suspension to be checked, and the probe to be mounted at a position where filling and emptying do not subject it to strong lateral forces.

Comparison and ordering

The VEGACAP 65 is the partly insulated cable for dry solids and non-conductive liquids; the fully insulated VEGACAP 66 serves liquids and solids to 150 °C, and the VEGACAP 67 reaches +400 °C. Quote the probe length, thread or flange, supply voltage and output type, and mention cone and wall distances in the silo so a suitable arrangement can be confirmed with the manufacturer.

Since the same family offers the relay and contactless electronic switch versions, the transistor version of this sheet is the one for PLC inputs. For hazardous areas, VEGA’s documentation lists Ex approvals as available by version and ship approvals for the family, so declare any requirement in your enquiry. The product information notes that the cable should be installed away from the filling stream, and that the permissible tensile load of the suspension is printed in the technical data of the operating instructions.

About brand

VEGA is a German maker of level and pressure instruments. Bruno Grieshaber founded the company in 1959 in Triberg in the Black Forest, and it has been based in Schiltach since 1975, still family owned as VEGA Grieshaber KG. VEGA is best known for radar level sensors: it introduced the first two-wire radar level sensor in 1997 and the first 80 GHz radar sensor for bulk solids, the VEGAPULS 69, in 2015.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing VEGA radar and guided wave radar transmitters, point level switches, pressure transmitters and signal conditioning instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Sensors are matched from the product code on the type label.

Where VEGA instruments are used

VEGA radar sensors measure level in crude oil and product tanks, separators, chemical reactors, cement and aggregate silos, grain stores and water reservoirs. Compact cable radars are widely used in wastewater pumping stations and flood monitoring. Because 80 GHz radar focuses a narrow beam, it can measure past internal structures in a tank, and it is not affected by the temperature, pressure or vapour above the product, which suits hot Gulf storage tanks.

Ordering VEGA instruments: what we need

The product code on the type label (for example PS64.XXXXXXX) fixes the measuring range, antenna or probe, process connection, electronics and approvals. Send it with the serial number. For a new measurement add the medium and its dielectric constant if known, tank or silo height and internals, process pressure and temperature, process connection, output (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS PA, Modbus or IO-Link), and any hazardous-area or overfill protection approval required.
