Choosing the electrical and port options

The L plug connector gives a short lead with a plug-in coil, which is faster to replace than a grommet lead; the catalogue also lists grommet (G, H), M plug, DIN terminal and M8 connector styles, and the enclosure is dustproof, with the DIN terminal and M8 connector styles rated IP65 (based on IEC 529 as printed). The Z option adds an LED indicator and a surge suppressor, which protects PLC outputs from coil switching voltage.

The same valve is available with one-touch fittings for 4, 6 or 8 mm tube (C4, C6, C8) in place of the 1/8 thread, and with G, NPT or NPTF thread letters; the catalogue shows flow values for each. The 1/8 Rc port suits a standard pneumatic installation with threaded fittings.

Selection notes for machine builders

A 5-port single valve controls a spring-return setup: when the coil is de-energised the main valve returns, so the cylinder moves to a known position on power loss. For cylinders that must hold position on a loss of power, a 3-position closed-centre version (type 3 in the catalogue) is the other option. Match the valve flow to the cylinder: the effective flow figures above give a simple basis for estimating cylinder speed with the catalogue method.

SMC lists a power-saving circuit option (24 and 12 VDC only) that reduces holding power to 0.1 W with indicator light, selected with the coil-type letter T, which is not part of this code. Always use filtered, dry air and a cylinder speed controller to avoid slamming.

How the SY5120-5LZD-01 Works

The SY5120-5LZD-01 is an internally piloted valve. When 24 VDC is applied, a small pilot solenoid opens and feeds supply air from port 1 (P) to the end of the main spool. The spool shifts so that port 1 supplies port 4 (A), while port 2 (B) exhausts through port 3. When the coil is de-energised, the pilot exhausts and the return spring pushes the spool back, so port 1 supplies port 2 and port 4 exhausts through port 5. Because the pilot uses line air, the valve needs at least 0.15 MPa at port 1 to shift reliably. For vacuum or very low-pressure duty, SMC offers external pilot versions.

The Z suffix combines an LED indicator with a surge voltage suppressor. The LED lets technicians confirm that the PLC output is reaching the coil, and the suppressor limits the back-EMF spike when the coil is switched off. In SMC’s SY3000/5000/7000 specifications, the surge suppressor is a diode (a varistor on non-polar types).

Note the narrower allowable voltage fluctuation for S and Z types (−7% to +10% at 24 VDC). The internal circuit drops a little voltage, so long cable runs from a weak 24 V supply should be checked.

When replacing an installed valve, read the full code from the label rather than the series name alone. A different connector letter, voltage or thread will not fit the existing wiring or fittings.

Installation & Maintenance

• Blow out piping before connecting it, and wrap sealing tape so that it does not enter the valve.
• Fit silencers on the exhaust ports in occupied areas, and keep exhaust ports unobstructed.
• Use the manual override only after confirming that cylinder movement is safe. The D type locks when it is pushed and turned, so return it to its off position after testing.
• Supply filtered, dry air. Lubrication is not required, but once oil has been introduced it should be continued.
