AEG Protect 8 S10 Industrial UPS 10-160 kVA

Description

A building-block industrial UPS for heavy-duty applications

The AEG Protect 8 S10 is the highly flexible member of the Protect 8 industrial UPS series, rated 10 to 120 kVA three-phase and 10 to 160 kVA single-phase. Input is 380/400/415 VAC three-phase; output is 380/400/415 VAC three-phase or 220/230/240 VAC single-phase, and other values are available on request.

AEG Power Solutions describes the S10 as meeting practically all requirements for heavy industries and infrastructure. The double-conversion building-block design splits the main functions into separate blocks, which the brochure says makes the unit easier to customise, upgrade and maintain and shortens lead times. The expected lifetime is at least 20 years.

Features and application range

Listed features include redundant parallel operation, a potential-free output with galvanic isolation and low noise, a fully redundant control architecture, very fast dynamic response, a short-circuit proof output, EMC immunity and emission better than IEC 62040, 18 embedded languages, low voltage ripple, intelligent battery charge and monitoring, and lithium-ion battery charging options. A manual bypass and a dual-mains configuration are shown in the block diagram.

Typical applications are oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, transportation and other heavy industry, including harsh environments with stringent seismic spectrums, high humidity and wide temperature range.

Selection and what to confirm before ordering

Choose the DC voltage by rating: the 108 V option is shown up to 60 kVA three-phase, 216 V up to 120 kVA, and the 384 V column lists only single-phase 160 kVA output. Cabinet dimensions and weights are not printed in this sheet, so request them from the quotation.

Confirm the input and output voltage and phases, bypass arrangement, battery type and autonomy, any redundancy or parallel requirement, the required IP degree and the site altitude and temperature. For monoblock compact units see the Protect 8 S14.

Why an industrial UPS differs from an IT UPS

Commercial data-centre UPS units are optimised for compact size and maximum efficiency in clean, air-conditioned rooms. An industrial UPS such as the Protect 8 S10 is designed around different priorities: an isolating output transformer that gives galvanic separation and a potential-free output, high overload and short-circuit capability to clear downstream fuses, a long design life of at least 20 years, and tolerance of wider input voltage variations and harsher environments. The 150% for 1 minute and 125% for 10 minute overload ratings, plus up to three times nominal current on short circuit, allow the UPS to start motors, solenoids and transformers and to selectively trip faulty branches without transferring to bypass.

Double conversion with a building-block structure

In double-conversion operation the rectifier converts the mains to DC, which charges the battery and feeds the inverter; the inverter then generates a clean, regulated output. If mains fails, the battery takes over without any break. The S10 divides rectifier, inverter, static switch and control into separate blocks, so options such as a 12-pulse rectifier, input filter, dual mains or redundant parallel configuration can be added without redesigning the whole system.

Choosing the DC voltage and battery

The DC bus voltage determines the number of battery cells and the current they must deliver. A higher voltage, such as 216 V or 384 V, reduces DC current and cable size at larger ratings, while 108 V suits smaller systems. Battery technology (vented lead-acid, VRLA, nickel-cadmium or lithium-ion) is chosen by required autonomy, ambient temperature and maintenance policy. In hot Gulf substations, nickel-cadmium batteries are often preferred for their tolerance of high temperature, whereas lead-acid batteries lose life rapidly above about 25 °C.

Site conditions in Oman and the GCC

  • The rated range of −10 to +40 °C without derating requires a ventilated or air-conditioned room in most of the region.
  • Specify the IP43 option for dusty sites or where the cabinet is exposed to dripping water.
  • Coastal plants should consider cabinet heaters or conformal coating options to resist humidity and salt-laden air.
  • Allow access space for front maintenance and cable entry as per the manufacturer layout drawings.

Typical uses

Process control and safety systems in oil and gas facilities, substation control and protection supplies, desalination and water plant instrumentation, airport and port infrastructure, and emergency lighting and fire systems in industrial buildings.
