Description
Ultrasonic water metering for apartments and small commercial supplies
The Kamstrup MULTICAL 21 and flowIQ 2101 is a hermetically closed compact static water meter for registering cold and hot water in households, apartment buildings and small commercial properties. Two ultrasonic transducers send sound with and against the flow, and the time difference gives velocity and volume, so there are no moving parts to wear. Kamstrup quotes a start flow of only 2 l/h for Q3 of 1.6 and 2.5 m³/h and 3.2 l/h for Q3 of 4.0 m³/h, and built-in leak monitoring down to 0.1 % of Q3. The meter also measures water and ambient temperature and logs minimum, mean and maximum values.

Type number, cold or hot water and communication
The type number has the form 021-YY-C0x-8XX. The letter after C0 selects the size, flow range and thread length, from C0A (Q3 1.6 m³/h, G¾B x 110 mm) to C0P (Q3 4.0 m³/h, G1B x 190 mm). YY selects the communication package, XX is the country code assigned by Kamstrup, and the last block is 8XX for cold water and 7XX for hot water. Extension pipes are available as accessories so the meter can match existing installation lengths. Info codes on the display include LEAK, BURST, TAMPER, DRY and REVERSE, which help operators locate losses and fraud attempts.
Installation and where it fits
The meter can be installed horizontally or vertically independent of piping and installation conditions. The housing is moulded composite with a vacuum-sealed electronics chamber, so condensation between glass and display is avoided; the unit can only be opened by Kamstrup, and a broken seal ends its validity for billing. How the Kamstrup MULTICAL 21 works
Two ultrasonic transducers send sound pulses through the water, one with the flow and one against it. The pulse with the flow arrives first. The meter measures the time difference and calculates the velocity and the volume. With no moving parts there is nothing to wear. A battery in the meter powers the electronics and the radio.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the MULTICAL 21
Flush the pipe before fitting the meter. Fit it with the arrow along the flow and with the seals in place. Keep the pipe full of water. Check the display and the leak monitor after start-up. Keep the radio free from metal covers.

What is the difference between MULTICAL 21 and flowIQ 2101?
According to the datasheet they are one meter platform. The version with Wired M-Bus is ordered under the name flowIQ 2101, and the Wireless M-Bus and Sigfox versions under MULTICAL 21.
Which sizes and temperature classes are available?
Nominal flow Q3 is 1.6, 2.5 or 4.0 m3/h with G3/4B or G1B connections and lengths of 105 to 190 mm. Cold water is 0.1 to 30 °C (T30) or 0.1 to 50 °C (T50), and hot water is 0.1 to 70 °C (T70) or T30/70 on M-Bus versions.
How is the meter read?
By display or optical eye, or remotely. Wireless M-Bus radio packages transmit every 16 or 96 seconds and can be set for drive-by or fixed network, while the Sigfox version transmits daily. A wired M-Bus version is also offered.
Can it be installed outdoors in a meter pit?
The meter is IP68 type tested and hermetically sealed, and the datasheet describes pit installation and bathroom environments. Direct prolonged sunlight must be avoided.
