Kamstrup MULTICAL 803 Heat and Cooling Energy Calculator

Description

An energy calculator for district cooling and plant-room metering

The Kamstrup MULTICAL 803 is a robust, all-round calculator for energy measurement in heating and cooling circuits. According to the manufacturer it can serve as a heat meter, a cooling meter or a bifunctional heat/cooling meter together with one or two flow sensors and one, two, three or four temperature sensors, in open and closed systems. Under EN 1434 and the MID it is a “calculator” with a separate type approval, so the flow sensors and temperature sensors are ordered to match the application. Its data logger is fully programmable and includes minute loggers, which suits billing, performance monitoring and commissioning checks on larger chilled-water and hot-water systems.

Type number and configuration

The type number written on the meter front has the form 803-X-X-XX-X-XX and defines the calculator type, meter type, country code, flow sensor connection, temperature sensor set and supply modules. Meter type digits include 2 (heat, MID), 3 and 6 (heat/cooling), 4 (heat, national approval), 5 (cooling), and 7 to 9 for hot volume, cold volume and energy meters. Flow sensor connection codes include 1 and 2 (delivered with one or two ULTRAFLOW) and 7 and 8 (prepared for one or two). Supply modules range from one 230 VAC or 24 VAC/VDC module, powering two communication modules, to two modules powering four. The configuration number then sets flow sensor position (inlet or outlet), energy unit (GJ, kWh, MWh or Gcal) and display resolution, for example 807, 808 or 818 for ULTRAFLOW auto detect.

Communication and installation

Module options listed by Kamstrup include pulse inputs and outputs, wired M-Bus, linkIQ/wM-Bus, low power and high power radio, NB-IoT, LON TP/FT-10, BACnet MS/TP and IP, Modbus RTU and TCP/IP, analog inputs and outputs, a PQT controller and 2G/4G network. Slot availability differs by module, so state the reading system you need. The calculator top can be separated from the connection base with a 4 mm Allen wrench once the installation seals are broken. At medium temperatures below ambient or above 90 °C in the flow sensor, wall mounting of the calculator is recommended. How the Kamstrup MULTICAL 803 works

The calculator reads the flow signal and the temperature signals. It works out the temperature difference between supply and return. It multiplies this by the flow and the heat properties of the water. The result is shown and logged as energy.

About brand

Ultrasonic measurement with no moving parts is the idea behind the flowIQ water meters and ultrasonic energy meters of Kamstrup. The Danish company, founded in 1946 in Skanderborg, makes meters for water, heat and cooling that are read remotely. Seven Star LLC lists the Kamstrup flowIQ water meters and the MULTICAL 403 energy meter, and supplies Kamstrup meters to utilities, district cooling operators and building owners in Oman and the GCC.

Kamstrup meter families on this page

The flowIQ 2200 is an ultrasonic smart water meter for residential, multi-unit and commercial connections. The flowIQ 4200 is the bulk water meter, made in five sizes from DN125 to DN300. The MULTICAL 403 is an ultrasonic thermal energy meter that can be supplied as a heat meter, a cooling meter or a combined heat and cooling meter, with a matched pair of temperature sensors and communication modules.

Ordering Kamstrup meters: what we need

Send the type number from the meter front if you are matching installed units. Otherwise give nominal flow and pipe size, connection type and meter length, heat or cooling service, where the flow sensor sits (supply or return pipe), the temperature sensor type and cable length, and the communication you need, for example wired M-Bus or a radio option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MULTICAL 803 used for?
It is a calculator for energy measurement in thermal installations where water carries the energy. It can be a heat meter, a cooling meter or a bifunctional heat/cooling meter with one or two flow sensors and one to four temperature sensors, and the datasheet also lists leakage monitoring, power, flow and temperature limiting with valve control.
Which flow sensors can be connected?
The two flow sensor inputs take ULTRAFLOW electronic sensors as well as mechanical sensors with reed or FET switches, and 24 V active pulses with a connection PCB. The pulse value is configurable from 0.001 to 300 pulses per litre and nominal flow sizes from 0.6 to 15,000 m3/h can be configured.
How is it powered and what happens in a power failure?
It is mains supplied from 230 VAC or 24 VAC/VDC, depending on the supply module in the type number. A built-in 3.6 V lithium backup battery keeps energy measurement running for 6 years if the supply fails.
What communication modules are available?
There are four module slots. The datasheet lists pulse, wired M-Bus, linkIQ/wM-Bus, radio, NB-IoT, LON, BACnet MS/TP and IP, Modbus RTU and TCP/IP, analog in/out, PQT controller and 2G/4G modules, with some restricted to certain slots.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Kamstrup?
No. Seven Star LLC is an independent industrial supplier in Muscat and is not a distributor or agent of Kamstrup. We check the type number and configuration against Kamstrup documentation before quoting.
