Brand: Cla-Val
Cla-Val 61-02 Deep Well Pump Control Valve
Description
Protecting a well column and pipeline from starting surges
The Cla-Val 61-02 protects pipelines from surges caused by starting and stopping deep well pumps. It is a hydraulically operated diaphragm valve, built on the 100-02 Powertrol main valve and controlled by a CSM11 solenoid pilot valve. Separate adjustable flow control valves in the pilot system regulate the opening and closing rates, and a limit switch on the valve stem is the electrical interlock with the pump motor.
It differs from a booster-pump valve because it works on the pump column. With the pump off, the valve is wide open; at start-up it closes slowly.

The deep well sequence
When the pump is started, the solenoid is energized and the valve begins to close slowly, discharging air and the initial rush of sand and water from the pump column to atmosphere. As the valve closes, pump output is gradually diverted into the main line, so no starting surge develops. When the pump is to stop, the solenoid is de-energized and the pump keeps running while the valve opens slowly and diverts pump output to atmosphere. As pump pressure falls, the main line check valve closes slowly, preventing shock or slam. When the valve is wide open, the limit switch releases the pump starter.
The valve operation is completely automatic under solenoid control, and the solenoid can be operated manually. Cla-Val recommends a 52-02 or 652-03 Surge Anticipator for power failure and surge protection.
Sizing the 61-02 and drain provisions
The datasheet gives a sizing method: take the system static pressure with the pump off, subtract 10 psi to find the design pressure, and select the valve from the flow chart at that pressure; with a static pressure of 70 psi the design pressure is 60 psi. The valve should be sized for a pressure loss at least 10 psi below the system static pressure. Suggested maximum flow is 460 gpm at 3 in, 800 gpm at 4 in, 1,800 gpm at 6 in, 3,100 gpm at 8 in, 7,000 gpm at 12 in and 25,000 gpm at 24 in.
Each time the valve opens or closes, water is discharged from the solenoid exhaust port, so provide a drain with an air gap. Use at least 1/2 inch tubing from the operating pressure connection to the system side of the check valve. Water to 180 °F is the pilot temperature limit, and the solenoid maximum pressure is 300 psi.
How the Cla-Val 61-02 works
The main valve is a diaphragm valve moved by line pressure through a solenoid pilot. When the pump starts, the solenoid closes the pilot and the valve shuts slowly. The pump flow is then turned gradually into the main line. When the pump stops, the valve opens slowly first, so the water in the line does not slam back.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the 61-02
Fit the valve in the pump discharge line with the strainer on the pilot system. Wire the solenoid and the limit switch to the pump starter. Adjust the two flow controls to set the closing and opening times. Test the start and stop cycle and watch the pressure. Clean the strainer from time to time.

About brand
Cla-Val is an American manufacturer of automatic control valves, founded in 1936 and headquartered in Costa Mesa, California. The company introduced the industry's first hydraulic actuated globe valve in the late 1930s and today builds hydraulically operated, diaphragm-actuated main valves with pilot control systems for pressure, flow, level and pump control.
Control valve and air valve range
The range is built around the Hytrol 100-01 main valve. Pilot systems on that body create pressure reducing and sustaining valves such as the 90-01 and 92-01, rate of flow valves, solenoid valves, pump control valves, check valves, and altitude and level control valves. Cla-Val also lists air release and vacuum valves and silent or two-door wafer check valves, each with an engineering data sheet that gives sizes, materials and pilot ranges.
Markets and materials
Cla-Val addresses waterworks, fueling, marine, mining and industrial applications. Its data sheets state that valves are manufactured in more than 50 different alloys, with ductile iron, cast steel and bronze as the standard body materials and fusion-bonded epoxy coating as an option.

Frequently Asked Questions
It protects pipelines from surges caused by starting and stopping deep well pumps, using a solenoid-controlled Powertrol main valve and a limit switch interlock.
Wide open. When the pump starts, the valve closes slowly, discharging air and the initial rush of sand and water to atmosphere.
After the stop signal the valve opens slowly, and once it is wide open the limit switch releases the pump starter.
Subtract 10 psi from the system static pressure with the pump off to get the design pressure, then select the size from the flow chart at that pressure.
Water leaves the solenoid exhaust port at each opening and closing, so a drain with an air gap should be provided.
