Brand:

Cla-Val 136-01 Solenoid Control Valve

Description

A hydraulic on-off valve operated by an electrical signal

The Cla-Val 136-01 is an on-off control valve that opens or closes when its solenoid pilot receives an electrical signal. It consists of a Hytrol 100-01 main valve and a three-way CS3 solenoid valve that alternately applies pressure to, or relieves pressure from, the diaphragm chamber of the main valve. The valve is furnished normally open (solenoid de-energized to open) or normally closed (energized to open).

Cla-Val lists fast-acting solenoid control, reliable drip-tight shut-off and easy installation and maintenance. A check feature is optional.

The maximum operating pressure differential is 200 psi unless otherwise specified, and a flowing pressure differential of at least 5 psi is required. The solenoid fluids are air, water and light oils, and the temperature limit is water to 180 °F.

Applications and options

Industrial uses named by Cla-Val are accurate control of process water for batching, mixing, washing and blending. For tank filling, a float switch or an electrode probe can send the electrical signal that opens or closes the valve, which turns the 136-01 into a simple liquid level control.

Suggested maximum flow is 55 gpm at 1 in, 125 gpm at 1-1/2 in, 210 gpm at 2 in, 460 gpm at 3 in and 800 gpm at 4 in. Options include an X46A strainer, CK2 isolation valves, CNA closing and opening speed controls, a check valve with isolation valve, an X141 gauge, an X101 position indicator and an X43 Y-strainer or X43H stainless steel strainer.

How the Cla-Val 136-01 works

The main valve is a Hytrol 100-01, a hydraulically operated diaphragm valve. Line pressure acts on a diaphragm chamber above the valve seat. When the pressure is applied to the chamber, the diaphragm pushes the valve closed. When the pressure is relieved, the line pressure lifts the diaphragm and the valve opens. The CS3 three-way solenoid valve decides which of the two happens. When the solenoid is switched, it either feeds the chamber or vents it. The valve is therefore opened and closed by an electric signal, using the pressure of the line. A normally open version opens when the solenoid is de-energized, and a normally closed version opens when it is energized.

Where the 136-01 is used

  • Remote on-off control of water lines
  • Tank filling and level control with a float or probe switch
  • Irrigation and process water lines
  • Cooling water and fire protection supply lines
  • Automatic isolation by a control system or timer

Selection checklist for the 136-01

  • Size from 1/2 to 4 in and the end connection, threaded, flanged or grooved
  • Body material, ductile iron, cast steel or bronze
  • Pressure class, 150 or 300, and the system pressure
  • Normally open or normally closed operation
  • Solenoid voltage and frequency, and the coil power
  • Enclosure, NEMA 1 to 4X or an explosion-proof NEMA 7 or 9
  • Flow, against the suggested maximum for the size
  • Water temperature up to 180 degrees F (82 degrees C)

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Flush the line before installing the valve so that debris does not reach the pilot system. Fit the valve with the flow in the direction marked on the body, and leave room around it for service. Wire the solenoid to the correct voltage and check the supply. A strainer upstream protects the pilot parts. Test the valve by cycling it a few times, and listen for a clean, quick action. Inspect the pilot and the diaphragm at overhauls.

About brand

Cla-Val is an American manufacturer of automatic control valves, founded in 1936 and headquartered in Costa Mesa, California. The company introduced the industry's first hydraulic actuated globe valve in the late 1930s and today builds hydraulically operated, diaphragm-actuated main valves with pilot control systems for pressure, flow, level and pump control.

Control valve and air valve range

The range is built around the Hytrol 100-01 main valve. Pilot systems on that body create pressure reducing and sustaining valves such as the 90-01 and 92-01, rate of flow valves, solenoid valves, pump control valves, check valves, and altitude and level control valves. Cla-Val also lists air release and vacuum valves and silent or two-door wafer check valves, each with an engineering data sheet that gives sizes, materials and pilot ranges.

Markets and materials

Cla-Val addresses waterworks, fueling, marine, mining and industrial applications. Its data sheets state that valves are manufactured in more than 50 different alloys, with ductile iron, cast steel and bronze as the standard body materials and fusion-bonded epoxy coating as an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Cla-Val 136-01 work?
A three-way solenoid applies line pressure to, or releases it from, the diaphragm chamber of a Hytrol main valve, so the valve opens or closes when the solenoid receives an electrical signal.
Is it normally open or normally closed?
Either. The valve is furnished normally open (de-energized to open) or normally closed (energized to open); this must be specified at order.
Which voltages are available for the solenoid?
110 and 220 V 50 Hz AC; 24, 120, 240 and 480 V 60 Hz AC; and 6, 12, 24, 120 and 240 V DC. Other voltages are available at additional cost.
Can it be used for tank level control?
Yes. The datasheet describes liquid level control using a float switch or electrode probe that sends an electrical signal to open or close the valve.
What sizes are available?
The datasheet lists 1/2 to 4 inch (15 to 100 mm) with maximum suggested flows from 19 gpm at 1/2 in to 800 gpm at 4 in.
