NI-9472 8-Channel Sourcing Digital Output Module | C Series
Description
NI-9472 8-channel sourcing digital output module for 6 V to 30 V loads
The National Instruments NI-9472 is a C Series digital output module with 8 sourcing channels. Each channel switches signals in the 6 V to 30 V range, so the same module drives 12 V and 24 V logic loads such as relay coils, indicator lamps, contactor coils and small solenoids. The maximum digital update rate is 100 µs.
Sourcing means that the module supplies the positive voltage to the load, and the load is connected between the output channel and the common. This is the usual arrangement for 24 VDC control panels, and it is why the NI-9472 is chosen when downstream devices expect a positive-switched signal.

How the NI-9472 switches field devices
The module takes commands from the host controller over the C Series bus and drives each channel high or low in sync with the chassis timing. With a maximum update interval of 100 µs, outputs follow the control loop quickly enough for sequencing, interlocks and event-triggered pulse applications, while remaining slow enough to be easy on relay contacts.
Because the channels are sourcing, a load connected to a channel is energised when the channel is turned on, and the current returns to the supply common. External supply voltage must be provided to the module in the 6 V to 30 V window, and that supply sets the voltage that appears at the load.
Protective practice for inductive loads
Relay and contactor coils generate voltage spikes on turn-off. Although each channel has transient overvoltage protection, a flyback diode or RC network across the coil is good practice and extends the life of the outputs. Check the load current against the module data before connecting, since per-channel current ratings are given in the manufacturer’s specification document and are not repeated here.
Matching the NI-9472 to your controller
The module belongs to the C Series ecosystem and is installed in a compatible CompactRIO or CompactDAQ chassis. In CompactRIO, a program on the FPGA can drive the outputs directly for fast deterministic switching, or the real-time processor can handle slower sequencing. A controller such as the cRIO-9045 provides eight slots for combinations of input, output and communication modules.
The NI-9472 is a sourcing output, so it is not the module for loads that need a sinking arrangement. Match it with input modules and analogue output modules, for example the NI-9208 for current inputs and the NI-9265 for current outputs, to build a complete I/O set.
Selecting the right NI-9472 variant
- Screw terminal versions suit panels with standard ferrules; the plug is included.
- The 25-pin D-SUB version 779137-01 is intended for pre-made cables to a terminal interface.
- The spring terminal version 783907-01 gives quick, vibration-tolerant wiring.
- Version 779004-02 is conformal coated for humid or dusty plants.
- Confirm that the load supply is between 6 V and 30 V and that the load current is within the manufacturer’s limits.
Installation and maintenance of the NI-9472
Wire the external supply first and verify its voltage with a meter before connecting loads. Fit a fuse or protective device suitable for each load group, and label each channel with its tag. During commissioning, force each output individually from the host software and confirm the field device responds, then confirm the safe state after a controller stop or power cycle.
The module does not wear mechanically, but its outputs can be damaged by shorts and by overvoltage. If an output stops working, measure the supply and the load first. Keep a spare module available for plants where a failed output would stop production.
Typical applications of the NI-9472 in Oman and the GCC
In the Gulf, a module like this switches pilot relays on pump skins, signals for valve open/close commands, alarm beacons, horns and status lamps in water treatment and desalination plants, and test-rig actuators in laboratories and workshops. In power generation, it drives auxiliary relays on test benches and mobile skids. Dust and heat in outdoor cabinets make the conformal coated version attractive for exposed installations.
Seven Star LLC supplies National Instruments modules in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and can help match modules to existing CompactRIO systems.

About brand
National Instruments (NI) is an American maker of test, measurement and data acquisition systems, founded in 1976 in Austin, Texas, by James Truchard, Jeff Kodosky and Bill Nowlin. NI is known for the LabVIEW graphical programming environment and for modular hardware such as CompactDAQ, CompactRIO and PXI. Emerson completed its acquisition of NI in 2023, and NI now operates as Emerson's Test & Measurement business.
Seven Star LLC sources and supplies NI CompactRIO controllers and related hardware for monitoring and control projects in Oman and the GCC.

NI CompactRIO controllers listed
Two controllers are on this page, the cRIO-9035 and the cRIO-9053. Both run the NI Linux Real-Time operating system. NI describes the cRIO-9053 as a four-slot controller with a 1.33 GHz dual-core Intel Atom processor and an Artix-7 50T FPGA, with I/O reached through NI-DAQmx drivers or the LabVIEW FPGA Module. The cRIO-9035 is a different model with its own slot count and FPGA, so the two are not interchangeable without a check of the application.
Ordering NI hardware: what we need
Send the model name (for example cRIO-9053) and the NI part number from the label, which looks like 78xxxx-01. List the C Series modules that will sit in the chassis, and say which software versions the project uses, because driver support depends on the controller generation. For a replacement, a photo of the label avoids confusion between similar model numbers.
