A double-jointed gear coupling for high torque, sizes 112 to 1540
The Flender ZAPEX ZW gear coupling is a universally applicable torsionally rigid gear coupling built for high torques and harsh conditions. Flender’s instructions M3500-01 (edition 09/2022) cover the types ZWN, ZWNA, ZWD, ZWDA, ZZS, ZZSA, ZZSD, ZZDA, ZWNV and ZZSV.
Two hubs with external teeth engage in flanged sleeves with internal teeth, bolted together with fitting bolts and, on spacer types, a spacer. The teeth are lubricated with oil or grease; DUO sealing rings keep the lubricant in on the ZWN, ZZS and vertical types, while the ZWD, ZWDA, ZZSD and ZZDA types are made for oil flow lubrication without sealing rings. Types with the A suffix limit axial backlash with a two-part retaining ring.

Alignment and lubrication
Alignment is checked against the angular limit DeltaS no greater than ND x tan 1 degree (about ND divided by 60) for the standard types, or ND divided by 300 for the A types, and radial offset is judged against the tooth distance VA. Lubricants must be suitable for explosive atmospheres when applicable, and Flender refers to its approved lubricant lists. The manual also covers sealing the parallel keyways with liquid plastic and the mounting of the thrust and support elements for the vertical types.
Ordering notes
State the type, size, both bores and keyways, power and speed, mounting position (horizontal or vertical), lubrication method and ATEX requirement. The ZAPEX ZW is a different line from the N-ZAPEX XW and XN series on this site; couplings are grouped in Electric Motors, and a gear unit that is often paired is the Flender ONE.

Large industrial gearboxes are the product most engineers associate with Flender, a company founded in 1899 and based in Bocholt, Germany, that builds gear units, couplings and drive systems. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Flender gear units and their spare parts for mills, conveyors, pumps and marine drives in Oman, working from the nameplate data. On some nameplates the name appears as Siemens Flender.

Four items are listed. Flender ONE is the manufacturer's redesigned single-stage helical gear unit. The H2SV 09 is a two-stage helical gear unit of size 09 with a solid output shaft, shown here with a cooling coil and oil tank. The NAVILUS line covers marine gearboxes, listed in a multiple-input, single-output arrangement that brings several engines onto one propeller shaft, and in a version for dredgers. Flender couplings such as the flexible N-EUPEX type are often ordered with a gear unit.

Send a photo of the nameplate showing type, size, serial or order number, ratio, power and speeds. For spares, the serial number lets the parts list be traced, so add the item number of the bearing, seal or gear set you need. For a new unit, give the driven machine, motor power and speed, output speed, mounting position, shaft arrangement, ambient temperature and cooling method. Marine and dredger gearboxes for GCC yards also need the class society.
