Brand: FIAMM
FIAMM SD 15 2 V 280 Ah High-Rate Flooded Cell
Description
SD 15 is a 2 V flat-plate flooded cell from the FIAMM SD-SDH range, rated 280 Ah at the 10-hour rate to 1.80 volts per cell at 20 °C. The folder gives a 145 x 206 x 423 mm case holding 6.0 litres of electrolyte, with a typical weight of 26.3 kg including electrolyte.
A high-rate flooded cell for UPS, switchgear and oil and gas supplies
FIAMM describes the SD-SDH range as flat-plate flooded cells with a 15-year design life for applications that need high power in a short period: industrial UPS, utilities, industry, and oil and gas. The low-antimony plate design keeps water use down, and under normal float topping-up is required every three years.
SD 15 is the sixth of ten SD types, which run from SD 5 (80 Ah) to SD 23 (440 Ah) in 423 mm tall cases; the taller SDH series then starts at SDH 13 (480 Ah, 710 mm tall). With 280 Ah it fits mid-size switchgear and generator-start systems.
Characteristics given in the folder and the flooded manual
- Flat positive and negative plates; transparent SAN container and microporous PVC separators.
- Electrolyte specific gravity 1.27 kg per litre at 20 °C, higher than the 1.24 of the LM tubular range.
- Topping-up every three years under normal float; self-discharge lowered by design.
- Vent plugs with a ceramic part release gas on charge; a plain vent is available on some types.
- Fully recyclable at end of life, and the cell is listed against IEC 60896-11 vented-type requirements.

Derived values (calculated here, not printed)
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| String of 60 cells float voltage | 60 x 2.23 = 133.8 V at 20 °C (120 V battery) |

Choosing SD 15 inside the SD series
SD 13 (240 Ah) and SD 15 (280 Ah) share the 145 mm width, so the rack tray is the same; SD 17 to SD 23 are 187 mm wide. Ten SD steps between 80 and 440 Ah let you size a string closely to the DC load without paralleling.
Electrolyte volume is printed per cell, so order or plan filling quantities from the folder when cells are delivered dry charged.
Filling, charging and installation notes from the manual
Dry-charged cells are filled with electrolyte to the MAX line after rack installation, rested about 3 hours, topped up if needed and put on charge within 18 hours. Record voltage, specific gravity and temperature of each cell first, and stop charging at 45 °C until the cell cools to about 35 °C.
Space cells 10 to 15 mm apart on acid-resistant racks, apply a thin layer of No-Oxide grease to cleaned connector surfaces, and keep the room between 10 and 30 °C, away from direct sunlight and open flames. Ventilation must be on during charging.
Where high-rate flooded cells fit in Gulf plants
The folder names industrial UPS, utilities, industry and oil and gas. In Oman that translates to substation DC supplies, compressor-station control batteries and generator starting. General engineering note: flooded cells need a ventilated battery room and water topping every three years, which suits attended sites better than unmanned remote shelters.
Related FIAMM items
LM and LM/S tubular OPzS cells give longer life in the same 206 mm deep trays, SGL-SGH are Planté cells with a 25-year design life, and FIAMM offers vent plugs, racks and remote venting accessories.
Battery room and maintenance notes
Flooded cells produce hydrogen during charging, so the battery room must be ventilated as required by the manual and the applicable standard, with no ignition sources near the cells. Battery life also depends strongly on temperature, so the room should be cooled in the region’s climate, and the charger’s float voltage and temperature compensation should be set as given in the manual.
Check the electrolyte level, specific gravity and cell voltages at the intervals in the manual, top up only with the specified water, and keep the cell tops clean and dry. Torque the connections to the stated values and recheck them during routine maintenance.
