Caleffi 546005 DISCALDIRT 3/4 Inch Deaerator and Dirt Separator

Description

The 546005 is the 3/4 inch DISCALDIRT, a Caleffi brass device that removes both air and dirt from a closed water circuit in one body. The float vent at the top expels micro-bubbles while the internal mesh element drops solids into a lower chamber with a drain cock, so a boiler, chiller or heat pump sees clean, air-free water without a separate strainer that needs to be opened and cleaned.

One body for air and dirt

In the DISCALDIRT the same concentric mesh surfaces do two jobs. They create the swirl that lets micro-bubbles attach, merge and rise to the vent, and they act as a collision surface for particles, which fall by gravity into the collection chamber at the bottom. Because nothing is trapped on a fine screen, the datasheet points out that head loss is much lower than a Y-strainer and is not affected by how much dirt has been collected: its comparison graph shows the 3/4 inch Y-strainer at Kv 8 against Kv 16.2 for the DISCALDIRT.

Key features from the datasheet

  • Separates air and dirt continuously and collects the solids in the lower chamber, from which they can be expelled while the system runs
  • Threaded versions carry a shut-off cock and hose connection with plug on the collection chamber
  • The 5461 series magnetic sibling adds ferrous-impurity capture; the 546005 here is the non-magnetic version
  • Pre-formed hot shell insulation supplied with the threaded 546005, 546006 and 546007, usable on chilled water
  • Serviceable in place: lift the top cover to reach the vent mechanism, or unscrew the large dirt chamber to pull out and wash the internal element
  • Float vent with a long float chamber that keeps impurities away from the seat

Installation and maintenance notes

  • Mount vertically only; the datasheet favours a spot just after the boiler, on the suction side of the pump, because most micro-bubbles form there.
  • Both heating and cooling circuits suit it; design for flow speeds around 1.2 m/s at the connections, which for the 3/4 inch body means 22.7 l/min.
  • Expel dirt through the drain cock during operation; to inspect the internal element, unscrew the dirt chamber to which it is fixed.
  • If the vent will be hard to inspect, swap its cap for the Caleffi 5620 hygroscopic version.
  • The datasheet reports that after about 50 recirculations (roughly one day of operation) up to 100 % of larger particles and on average about 80 % of smaller ones are removed from the circuit.

Applications in Gulf building services

Chilled-water loops in the region are often flushed and refilled during commissioning, and new pipework carries mill scale, weld spatter and sand that travel straight to heat exchangers, pumps and control valves. A 3/4 inch DISCALDIRT is a compact way to protect a single boiler, heat pump or fan-coil header, and the insulated body avoids condensation on cold lines. The datasheet limits medium to water and glycol solutions at 0 to 110 degrees C.

Selection and installation notes

Hydronic components are selected from the design flow, the pressure drop and the maximum working pressure and temperature of the circuit. Check the connection size and thread type, fit isolating valves so the part can be serviced, flush the pipework before commissioning and respect the flow direction marked on the body. Insulate heating and chilled-water parts according to the project specification.

About brand

Caleffi is an Italian manufacturer of valves and components for heating, plumbing and hydronic systems, founded in 1961 by Francesco Caleffi in Gozzano, south of Lake Orta. It began by machining parts for other companies and moved to its own products, such as air vents and safety valves, within two years. Production moved in 1975 to Fontaneto d'Agogna, still its headquarters, and the group is led by his son Marco Caleffi.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Caleffi components against exact codes and the official Caleffi datasheets, for MEP contractors and facility teams in Oman and the GCC.
