VEGA VEGAPOINT 31 Capacitive Level Switch for Powders

Description

A compact capacitive switch tuned for light, powdery bulk solids

The VEGAPOINT 31 is the bulk-solids version of the capacitive VEGAPOINT family. VEGA describes it as a capacitive level sensor for fine-grained and powdery bulk solids, optimised for light powdered materials, with overfill and dry-run protection as typical applications. It is a very small sensor: the sheet shows a 36 mm hexagon, 27 mm diameter body and 114 mm overall height, and it can be installed in thin pipelines. Setup is by Bluetooth, and the sheet covers the transistor (PNP/NPN) version with a 12…35 V DC supply.

Why a dedicated powder version

Light powders such as flour, starch or plastic dust have low dielectric constants, so the electronics of a water-oriented sensor would barely see a change. VEGA states that the VEGAPOINT 31 is optimised for light powdered materials. The sheet gives the same housing and thread options as the other VEGAPOINTs, so the same cable gland, M12 plug and adapters can be used across a plant. In the product information the 31 is the only member with ATEX, IEC, cCSAus and ship approvals listed together.

Mounting and setup

Use the Bluetooth app to set sensitivity at the actual powder rather than by water, since the sensor responds to the product’s dielectric properties. Install it where the powder flows past the tip, not in a dead zone, and mount threads with the appropriate seal. Quote the powder, bulk density, temperature, thread and output (PNP/NPN or IO-Link) in the RFQ, and have the Ex approval confirmed with VEGA before ordering for dust-hazard areas.

The sheet also shows the electrical wiring for the M12 plug with a PNP or NPN transistor and the connection options, and VEGA’s approvals list for the family refers to ATEX, EG 1935/2004, FDA, EHEDG and ship approvals. The 25 bar pressure rating and the process temperature of -40 to +115 °C (short excursions to +135 °C for one hour) cover most dry-process equipment, though hot-gas filters and dryers should be checked against the figure.

About brand

VEGA is a German maker of level and pressure instruments. Bruno Grieshaber founded the company in 1959 in Triberg in the Black Forest, and it has been based in Schiltach since 1975, still family owned as VEGA Grieshaber KG. VEGA is best known for radar level sensors: it introduced the first two-wire radar level sensor in 1997 and the first 80 GHz radar sensor for bulk solids, the VEGAPULS 69, in 2015.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing VEGA radar and guided wave radar transmitters, point level switches, pressure transmitters and signal conditioning instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Sensors are matched from the product code on the type label.

Where VEGA instruments are used

VEGA radar sensors measure level in crude oil and product tanks, separators, chemical reactors, cement and aggregate silos, grain stores and water reservoirs. Compact cable radars are widely used in wastewater pumping stations and flood monitoring. Because 80 GHz radar focuses a narrow beam, it can measure past internal structures in a tank, and it is not affected by the temperature, pressure or vapour above the product, which suits hot Gulf storage tanks.

Ordering VEGA instruments: what we need

The product code on the type label (for example PS64.XXXXXXX) fixes the measuring range, antenna or probe, process connection, electronics and approvals. Send it with the serial number. For a new measurement add the medium and its dielectric constant if known, tank or silo height and internals, process pressure and temperature, process connection, output (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS PA, Modbus or IO-Link), and any hazardous-area or overfill protection approval required.
