ABB ACS580-01-033A-4 AC Drive 15 kW 32 A
Description
A 15 kW ACS580-01 for 400 V motors
Rated 15 kW at 400 V with 32 A of nominal current, the ACS580-01-033A-4 comes from ABB’s ACS580-01 wall-mounted range. Its frame R3 housing is 203 mm wide by 229 mm deep. Frame R3 begins here at 15 kW, widening the housing to 203 mm. Typical loads are water-supply pumps, compressors and mixers of medium duty.
Setup is guided by the assistant control panel that ships with the drive, with a settings menu and start-up assistants. The family has a built-in choke, EMC filter, Modbus RTU and Safe Torque Off. Compare neighbouring ratings in the AC drives category or start from the ABB ACS580 overview.

Sizing the ACS580-01-033A-4 for your motor
Two numbers matter when sizing: 30.4 A for light-duty loads that rarely exceed nominal torque, and 24.6 A for loads with frequent overloads. The corresponding motor sizes are 15 kW and 11 kW at 400 V. Short peaks up to 44.3 A are permitted for 2 seconds at start. Use ABB DriveSize if the duty cycle is not a simple constant load.
Fit 40 A gG fuses (IEC) or 40 A Class T fuses (UL) ahead of the drive. Heat loss of 495 W and air flow of 179 m3/h set the cooling requirement, and noise peaks at 76 dBA. Keep motor cables within 300 m. If this rating is not right, compare ACS580-01-026A-4 at 25 A with ACS580-01-039A-4 at 38 A.
Option codes for the ACS580-01-033A-4
The type designation has four parts. ACS580 is the series. 01 marks the wall-mounted construction. 033A identifies the rating, and 4 stands for the 380 to 480 V range. After that come plus codes such as +B056 (IP55), +B063 (IP66), +F278 (main switch), +E223 (C1 filter), +C135 (flange mounting) and +P944 (no conduit box, R5 to R9). Leave them out for the plain IP21 drive.
Enclosure choices for frame R3: IP21 as standard, and IP55 at 490 (733 with options +F287, +F316 or +E223) x 206 x 237 mm. IP66 / UL Type 4X (+B063) measures 647 x 277 x 260 mm, 26.4 kg. Plug-in fieldbus adapters listed by ABB are FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP (+K454), FSCA-01 for Modbus RTU (+K458), FEIP-21 for EtherNet/IP (+K490) and FMBT-21 for Modbus/TCP (+K491).
Built-in features that reduce panel components
The ACS580-01 family integrates several items that would otherwise be separate parts in a motor control panel. Knowing what is already inside the drive helps keep the panel layout and bill of materials short.
- Built-in choke: limits harmonic current drawn from the supply, which matters on sites fed by a generator or a weak transformer.
- EMC filter: reduces conducted emissions, so a separate external filter is usually not needed for standard installations.
- Modbus RTU: the embedded fieldbus lets a PLC, SCADA or building management system start, stop and read status without additional hardware.
- Safe Torque Off (STO): a safety function that removes torque from the motor without disconnecting the drive from the supply, used as part of a machine safety circuit.
- Assistant control panel: guided start-up menus for motor data, I/O and application settings.
Light duty or heavy duty: choosing the right rating
The same hardware carries two ratings at 400 V because the overload pattern of the load determines how much continuous current the drive can deliver. A centrifugal pump or a fan has a torque demand that rises with speed and seldom needs a large overload, so the light-duty figure of 30.4 A with a 15 kW motor applies. A conveyor, a positive-displacement pump or a mixer that starts loaded may need 150% for a minute; in that case the heavy-duty figure of 24.6 A and an 11 kW motor are the safe choice.
When a 15 kW heavy-duty application is required, the correct step is to move up to the next ACS580-01 rating rather than running this unit beyond its heavy-duty current. Always compare the motor nameplate current, not only the kW figure, since motor efficiency and pole number affect the actual current.
Installation and cabinet considerations
- Mount the drive vertically on a solid wall or panel back plate with the free space above and below that the hardware manual specifies, so the 179 m³/h cooling air can circulate.
- Allow for around 495 W of heat in the enclosure when sizing panel fans or air conditioning; in an enclosed cabinet this figure decides the cooling design.
- Use the recommended 40 A gG fuses (or UL Class T) on the supply side and shielded symmetrical motor cable, keeping the motor cable within the 300 m recommendation.
- Earth the cable shield at both the drive and the motor ends with 360° glands to minimise interference.
- IP21 is a cabinet or clean-room rating; for dusty pump stations or outdoor kiosks, place the drive in a ventilated enclosure or consider an IP55 variant of the range.
Applications in Oman and GCC conditions
A 15 kW drive is a common size for booster pumps in buildings, water transfer stations, cooling-tower fans, chilled-water pumps and small compressors. Variable speed operation lets pumps and fans follow actual demand, which typically lowers energy use compared with throttling valves or dampers.
Electronics derate as ambient temperature rises, and summer temperatures in plant rooms across the region are often high. Check the derating curves in the ACS580-01 hardware manual against the real cabinet temperature, and keep heatsink fins and filters clean where sand and dust are present. Periodic inspection of the cooling fan and tightening of power terminals form part of routine maintenance.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
