Description
An ultrasonic cold water meter for blocks, pump stations and meter pits
The Kamstrup flowIQ 3100 is an electronic ultrasonic meter for measuring the distribution and consumption of cold water in blocks of flats, commercial premises, small pump stations and distribution wells. Q3 ranges from 2.5 up to 63 m³/h and the meter is approved with a dynamic range up to R630. The measuring tube is brass or stainless steel with a moulded PPS composite housing on top, and the electronics sit in a hermetically vacuum-sealed chamber, so condensation behind the display glass is avoided. Kamstrup states that the meter fits into a network of MULTICAL 21 household meters, so one reading system can cover the whole building.

Meter sizes and connections
The datasheet lists 23 type numbers in the form 031-YY-xxx-8XX, where YY is the communication package and XX the country code. A selection with the standard 100:1 and the 160:1 range variants is shown below; type numbers marked for selected markets only are omitted. Check valves are ordered separately, and strainers are factory-fitted on threaded meters except type C03.

Installation and selection
The meter can be mounted vertically or horizontally independent of the existing piping. How the Kamstrup flowIQ 3100 works
The flowIQ 3100 measures flow by ultrasound. Two transducers send sound pulses through the water, one with the flow and one against it. The pulse that travels with the flow arrives sooner. The electronics measure the difference in transit time, calculate the flow speed and add up the volume. There are no moving parts in the measuring tube, so the meter holds its accuracy over a wide range of flows.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes
Fit the meter in the pipe with the flow arrow in the flow direction, and order a check valve separately where needed. Strainers are factory fitted on the threaded meters. Configure the meter with the optical eye and USB, and read the registers. The battery life is up to 16 years, so there is no routine work other than reading and checking the seals and the connections.
