Petzl I’D S Self-Braking Descender with Anti-Panic
Description
A self-braking descender with anti-panic for daily rope access
The Petzl I’D S (reference D020AA00) is a self-braking descender with an anti-panic function for working on fixed ropes. Petzl designed it for experienced rope access technicians: an ergonomic handle gives comfortable descent control, and the anti-panic function stops the descent automatically if the user pulls too hard on the handle. An anti-error catch helps reduce the risk of an accident caused by installing the device on the rope incorrectly.
The AUTO-LOCK system lets the user position at a workstation without manipulating the handle or tying off: as soon as the handle is released, the rope is blocked. A safety gate on the moving side plate allows the rope to be installed while the device stays connected to the harness, and the handle returns to a storage position when the rope is removed.

Selecting and inspecting the descender
Choose the I’D S for 10 to 11.5 mm low-stretch rope; the I’D L suits larger 12.5 to 13 mm rope. Braking performance varies with rope condition and conditions of use such as diameter, wear, dirt, moisture and ice, so the instructions for use tell the user to check the behaviour of each rope before use. The instructions for use name the Petzl AXIS 11 mm rope among the ropes covered. An auxiliary brake can add friction for heavy loads or new, slippery rope. The lifespan is unlimited subject to inspection, and a detailed inspection by a competent person is recommended at least once every 12 months.
Pre-use checks and putting the I'D S into service
Each new descender should be logged in the rope access equipment register before it is issued, with its reference, the date it enters service and the name of the person responsible for periodic inspection. Keep a copy of the Petzl instructions for use with the kit so technicians can refer to the installation diagrams on site, not from memory.
Before every descent the technician should perform a visual and functional check: look over the side plates, handle and safety gate for deformation, cracks or sharp edges, make sure the moving side plate closes fully, and confirm that the rope is installed in the correct direction by testing that the device blocks when loaded. Only then should weight be transferred from the backup system onto the I'D S.
Practising the anti-panic and AUTO-LOCK functions
Users new to this descender benefit from practising close to the ground under supervision. Loading the device, releasing the handle at a workstation, then progressing through controlled descent helps each technician learn how much handle travel gives a smooth speed on the rope in use, and what it feels like when the anti-panic function engages. That familiarity matters more than speed when a real rescue is needed.
Rope access in Oman: heat, sand and sea air
Work on tanks, towers, cliffs, building facades and offshore structures in Oman and the GCC places extra demands on rope and hardware. Long descents in high ambient temperatures raise friction heat in any descender, so plan descent height and speed with the maximum descent energy and height values in the specification in mind, and allow the device to cool between repeated long drops.
Wind-blown sand and dust work into rope sheath and onto metal surfaces, changing braking behaviour and accelerating wear. Store ropes in bags off the ground, rinse equipment with fresh water after exposure to salt spray or heavy dust as the instructions permit, and dry it in shade rather than in direct sun. Sun exposure also degrades textile components in the system, so harnesses, lanyards and ropes used with the I'D S should follow their own inspection regimes.
Inspection records and retirement criteria
Alongside the pre-use check, the periodic detailed inspection by a competent person should be recorded with the date, findings and the next due date. Retire the device immediately if it has held a major fall or load, if any part is deformed or worn beyond the limits shown in the Petzl inspection guidance, or if its history is unknown.
Rescue planning should be in place before anyone goes on rope. Teams should agree who will operate the descender in a two-person rescue, how the rescuer will connect to the casualty, and which rope diameters on site fall within the 10 to 11.5 mm range the I'D S is designed for. Mixing rope types on one job without checking braking behaviour invites mistakes.
