Cla-Val 90-01 Pilot-Operated Pressure Reducing Valve

Description

Holding a steady downstream pressure whatever the demand

The Cla-Val 90-01 is a pilot-operated regulator that reduces a higher inlet pressure to a steady lower downstream pressure, regardless of changing flow rate or varying inlet pressure. A Hytrol 100-01 main valve is controlled by a CRD pressure-reducing pilot and an X58 restriction fitting. When downstream pressure rises above the pilot setting, the pilot and the main valve close drip-tight, so there is no creep of pressure on a dead-end system at night.

Cla-Val lists a fully supported, frictionless diaphragm, easy adjustment and service, an optional check feature and compliance with the lead reduction mandate for drinking water as the main benefits of the 90-01.

Pilot ranges, options and variants

The pilot spring range is chosen at order: 2 to 30, 15 to 75, 20 to 105 or 30 to 300 psi, with 30 to 300 psi supplied unless another range is specified, and 150 to 600 psi with the CRD-18 pilot. Remote sensing is available. The standard pilot system is low-lead bronze with stainless steel trim and Buna-N rubber, with stainless steel or Monel optional, for water to 180 °F.

Variants named on the datasheet are 90-01KO with anti-cavitation trim, 90-01H with an X43H strainer, 90-01KOH with both, and the reduced-port 690-01 series with the same suffixes. Optional accessories are an X46A flow clean strainer, CK2 isolation valves, closing and opening speed controls (the closing control must stay at least three turns off its seat), a check valve with isolation valve, an X141 gauge and an X101D position indicator. For low flows, LFS trim regulates smoothly below the industry-standard 1 fps without losing capacity. Integral low-flow bypass versions are the 90-48 and 90-99.

Planning a pressure reducing station

For stations with a wide demand range, Cla-Val shows a large and a small 90-01 in parallel, the small valve handling night flows and the large one covering peak load, with a downstream relief valve also recommended. Where the pressure drop is high enough to cause cavitation, the 90-01KO is the datasheet recommendation; use the Cavitation Guide to check whether a valve is a candidate.

Suggested maximum continuous flow on the datasheet is 210 gpm at 2 in, 460 gpm at 3 in, 800 gpm at 4 in, 1,800 gpm at 6 in, 3,100 gpm at 8 in, 7,000 gpm at 12 in and 11,000 gpm at 16 in, with higher intermittent values. For sizes of 450 mm and larger Cla-Val points to the 90-66.

How the Cla-Val 90-01 works

A Hytrol main valve sits in the line. A pressure-reducing pilot senses the downstream pressure. When that pressure rises above the setting, the pilot closes the main valve. When it falls, the pilot opens the valve again. The downstream pressure stays steady.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the 90-01

Flush the line before fitting the valve. Fit isolation valves on both sides. Set the pilot spring to the downstream pressure needed. Check that the valve closes tight at no flow. Inspect the pilot strainer at regular visits.

About brand

Cla-Val is an American manufacturer of automatic control valves, founded in 1936 and headquartered in Costa Mesa, California. The company introduced the industry's first hydraulic actuated globe valve in the late 1930s and today builds hydraulically operated, diaphragm-actuated main valves with pilot control systems for pressure, flow, level and pump control.

Control valve and air valve range

The range is built around the Hytrol 100-01 main valve. Pilot systems on that body create pressure reducing and sustaining valves such as the 90-01 and 92-01, rate of flow valves, solenoid valves, pump control valves, check valves, and altitude and level control valves. Cla-Val also lists air release and vacuum valves and silent or two-door wafer check valves, each with an engineering data sheet that gives sizes, materials and pilot ranges.

Markets and materials

Cla-Val addresses waterworks, fueling, marine, mining and industrial applications. Its data sheets state that valves are manufactured in more than 50 different alloys, with ductile iron, cast steel and bronze as the standard body materials and fusion-bonded epoxy coating as an option.

Sourcing through Seven Star LLC

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and quotes Cla-Val valves against the model number, size, pressure class, materials and pilot settings shown in the data sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Cla-Val 90-01 control?
It reduces a higher inlet pressure to a steady lower downstream pressure, regardless of changing flow rate or varying inlet pressure, using a CRD pilot on a Hytrol main valve.
Which pilot ranges can be ordered?
The datasheet lists 2 to 30, 15 to 75, 20 to 105 and 30 to 300 psi, plus 150 to 600 psi with the CRD-18 pilot. 30 to 300 psi is supplied unless another range is specified.
When is the 90-01KO used?
The KO version has anti-cavitation trim and is the datasheet recommendation where a large pressure drop would otherwise cause noise and cavitation damage.
Can a check feature be added?
Yes. A check feature is listed as an option: if pressure reverses, downstream pressure closes the main valve to stop return flow.
What is the maximum fluid temperature?
The datasheet gives water to 180 degrees F and advises consulting the factory for hot water applications.
