Brand:

Norgren PRA/182000/M ISO 15552 Pneumatic Cylinder

Description

A standard ISO 15552 profile cylinder in seven bores

The Norgren PRA/182000/M is a double-acting profile cylinder to ISO 15552 (formerly ISO 6431, VDMA 24562 and NFE 49-003-1), available in bores of 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100 and 125 mm. It has adjustable cushioning at both ends, polyurethane seals for low friction and long life, and a magnetic piston in the /M version so M/50 switches can be mounted flush in the profile slot. The non-magnetic version is PRA/182000.

It is the standard automation cylinder for pushing, pulling, clamping and lifting in packaging, handling, assembly and general plant equipment, where mounting accessories from any ISO 15552 supplier can be fitted. The datasheet lists a wide set of variants, from low-friction and special wiper versions to locking, non-rotating and four-position cylinders.

Sizes, thrust and variants

Theoretical thrust values at 6 bar come straight from the datasheet and ignore friction and load factors; size the bore with a margin.

Bore (mm) Port Rod (mm) Rod thread Thrust out (N) Thrust in (N)
32 G1/8 12 M10 x 1.25 482 414
40 G1/4 16 M12 x 1.25 754 633
50 G1/4 20 M16 x 1.5 1178 990
63 G3/8 20 M16 x 1.5 1870 1680
80 G3/8 25 M20 x 1.5 3016 2722
100 G1/2 25 M20 x 1.5 4710 4416
125 G1/2 32 M27 x 2 7363 6882

Variants named in the datasheet include /W2 (special wiper and seal for cement, plaster, sand, frost or ice), /X2 low friction for 1 to 10 bar, /MU extended rod, /MG rod bellows, /MW without cushioning, /JM double-ended rod, /MT four-position, /N2 non-rotating rod (bores 32 to 100), and /L4 with a passive locking unit that holds on loss of signal (bores 32 to 125). Confirm the exact suffix before ordering.

Cushioning is adjustable at both ends, with a cushion length of 19 mm on the 32 mm bore rising to 41 mm on the 125 mm bore, and an initial cushion volume from 12.3 to 451 cm3. Air consumption at 6 bar runs from 0.056 l per cm of outstroke on the smallest bore to 0.86 l per cm on the largest, so use these figures when you size the supply line and the valve that feeds the cylinder. Choose ports and valve flow so the cylinder reaches its speed without choking.

What to confirm before ordering

State bore, stroke, rod end and thread, rod material, variant suffix, mounting style (the datasheet lists a comprehensive range of mountings) and whether the magnetic piston is needed for switches. Another Norgren ISO 15552 cylinder, the tie-rod style ISOLine, is the Norgren PRA/802000/M, and more units are under pneumatic cylinders.

How the Norgren PRA/182000/M works

The PRA/182000/M is a double-acting cylinder. Compressed air is fed to one side of the piston to push the rod out, and to the other side to pull it back. Near the end of each stroke a cushioning plunger closes the main exhaust path, so the last part of the stroke is slowed by trapped air. Two needle screws set the cushioning. The piston carries a magnet, and a magnetic switch in the profile slot senses it to report the rod position. The body follows ISO 15552, so mounting parts from many makers fit.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the PRA/182000/M

Mount the cylinder on its foot, flange or clevis, and keep the load in line with the rod, because side loads wear the bearing. Connect the air lines to the ports and fit flow controls to set the speed. Screw the cushioning needles in or out until the end of stroke is smooth. Slide the M/50 switches into the slot and fix them. Keep the air clean and dry.

About brand

Compressed air is Norgren territory. The brand dates from 1925 and is found on machine pneumatics and on the instrument air side of process plants: filters and regulators ahead of the valve, solenoid valves that pilot the actuator, and the cylinders that do the work.

Seven Star LLC lists Norgren solenoid valves, air preparation units and pneumatic actuation items and supplies them to maintenance teams in Oman by the exact part number on the old component.

Norgren product families on this page

Air preparation is represented by the Excelon line, here the B74G-6AK-AD1-RMN filter regulator with 3/4 inch ports. Among directional valves the page lists the V51B517A-A2000, a 5/2 way pneumatic solenoid valve, and the Herion 2636 (26360 series) solenoid valve; Herion is an older name that still appears on many nameplates in process plants. Also listed are the 85750 solenoid actuated shut-off valve and ISO 15552 and roundline pneumatic cylinders.

Where Norgren components are used

Filter regulators condition instrument air for control valve positioners and on-off valve actuators. Solenoid valves of the Herion type pilot pneumatic actuators on shutdown and process valves in oil and gas, chemical and power plants. The V-series valves and cylinders belong to packaging machines, material handling and general factory automation, in the GCC as anywhere else.

Ordering Norgren parts: what we need

Norgren part numbers are long and every character counts. In a code such as B74G-6AK-AD1-RMN the blocks set the port size and thread, the drain type, the filter element, the bowl and the regulator spring. Send the complete number, or a photo of the label. For solenoid valves add the coil voltage and frequency, the port thread, the hazardous area protection required and the ambient temperature. For cylinders give the bore, stroke and mounting style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which standard does the PRA/182000/M follow?
ISO 15552, which replaced ISO 6431, and the datasheet also cites VDMA 24562 and NFE 49-003-1.
What does the /M mean?
The piston carries a magnet so magnetic switches can detect position. M/50 switches mount flush with the profile.
What is the pressure and temperature range?
1 to 16 bar and -20 to +80 degC. A high temperature style (T) is offered for up to 150 degC.
Can the cushioning be adjusted?
Yes. The standard cylinder has adjustable cushioning at both ends; there are also versions without cushioning.
