EUCHNER MSC-CB-AC-FI8FO2 Modular Safety Controller Base Unit

Description

Freely programmable safety controller in a 22.5 mm housing

The EUCHNER MSC-CB-AC-FI8FO2 (order no. 121289) is the base unit of the EUCHNER MSC modular safety control system. It evaluates safety devices such as door switches, emergency stop buttons and light curtains and switches two dual-channel safe semiconductor outputs (OSSD) at up to PL e, category 4. Unlike a fixed-function safety relay, the logic is configured on a PC with the EUCHNER Safety Designer software, so one device can replace several relays and be changed without rewiring.

The base unit has 8 single-channel or 4 dual-channel safety inputs, two control inputs for starting or restarting the outputs or for external device monitoring (EDM), four test outputs for short-circuit and overload monitoring, and two programmable monitoring outputs. A USB mini connection links it to the PC, and an optional memory module stores the configuration. The housing is only 22.5 mm wide and mounts on a TH 35 rail.

Expanding the MSC system

An MSC system consists of a base unit and up to 14 expansion modules, which together give up to 128 inputs, 16 dual-channel safe outputs and 32 monitoring outputs, with up to four modules of the same type. This FO2 base unit combines with the MSC-CE-… expansion modules, but not with the MSC-CE-…S modules, which only the FO4S base unit (MSC-CB-AC-FI8FO4S, 166057) can use alongside the standard ones. Expansion modules need the expansion plug AC-PL-B (121308) and the plug-in screw terminals AC-SC-04-V06 (121321) must be ordered separately.

Further accessories are the memory module MSC-M-A1 (121309) and a USB 2.0 type A to mini-B cable of 1.8 m (121322). A safety circuit must always be validated by the machine builder according to EN ISO 13849-1, so the integrated functions and wiring should be checked against the application risk assessment.

How the EUCHNER MSC safety controller works

The MSC base unit reads the safety inputs from connected devices, processes them according to the logic created in EUCHNER Safety Designer, and switches its OSSD outputs off when a safety function demands it. The OSSD outputs are tested continuously with short test pulses so that cross-circuits, short circuits to supply voltage and other wiring faults are detected. The four test outputs supply pulsed signals to contacts on safety devices, allowing the controller to detect shorts between input channels. Start, restart and EDM inputs let the designer choose automatic or manual reset and check that downstream contactors have actually dropped out before outputs are enabled again.

Key points from EUCHNER

  • Freely programmable, standalone or expandable
  • 8 single-channel / 4 dual-channel inputs, 2 control inputs
  • 2 dual-channel semiconductor outputs, PL e, category 4
  • 2 monitoring outputs and 4 test outputs
  • Optional memory module for the configuration
  • 22.5 mm housing with LED diagnostics

Selection guide

Count the safety devices and their channels first. If eight single-channel or four dual-channel inputs and two safe outputs are enough, the base unit can run on its own. For more devices, add MSC-CE expansion modules within the limits of 14 modules and 128 inputs. If the application needs the MSC-CE-…S expansion modules, choose the FO4S base unit instead, because the FO2 version cannot use them. Remember the screw terminals, the expansion plug and, if you want to transfer configurations quickly between machines, the memory module.

Installation and commissioning

Mount the unit on a TH 35 rail in a control cabinet with at least IP54 protection, supply it from a 24 V DC PELV source and keep safety wiring separate from power cables. After configuring the logic in Safety Designer, download it over USB, run the validation report, and test every safety function, including fault cases, before handing the machine over. Document the configuration and keep a copy on the memory module or in the machine file.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the GCC, the MSC base unit suits packaging lines, machine tools, robot cells, conveyors and process skids where several guard switches, emergency stops and light curtains must be combined in one compact, configurable controller.

About brand

EUCHNER is a German manufacturer of safety switches, guard locking systems and safety controls for machine safety, founded in 1940 and headquartered in Leinfelden-Echterdingen near Stuttgart. The family-owned company is best known for its guard locking and transponder-coded safety switches.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list EUCHNER safety components for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

EUCHNER product series

Guard locking switches include the transponder-coded CTP, CTA and CTS series, the CTM with BiState guard locking, the STP twin switch and the electromechanical TX1B and TZ series. The MGB2 Multifunctional Gate Box combines guard locking, handle and control elements on one door. Non-contact switches include the CES-IA set and the CES-AP RFID safety switch, and the CTP-I version provides monitoring without guard locking.

Control devices include the ZSM and ZSB three-position enabling switches, the RPS emergency stop rope pull switch, the ESM safety relays (including versions with time-delayed contacts and the ESM-TE301 expansion) and the MSC modular safety controller.

Where EUCHNER components are used

Safety guards and doors on machine tools, robot cells, presses, packaging machines and conveyor systems, emergency stop along conveyors and enabling during setup and teaching. A switch or actuator is one part of a safety function; the complete system must be designed and validated for its application.
