The Leybold 140 091 is the TRIVAC D 16 B-Ex IIB3 T4: an explosion-protected and pressure-burst-resistant two-stage rotary vane pump built as a complete system on a base frame, with an Ex e II T4 motor. Leybold specifies ATEX Category 1 inside the pump and Category 2 outside, marked II 1/2G Ex h IIB3 T4 Ga / Ex h IIC T4 Gb for an ambient range of 12 to 40 degrees C, under EC Type Examination Certificate IBExU03ATEX1017 X.

Category 1 inside the pump means the pump chamber itself is rated for an explosive atmosphere. The IIB3 T4 version is the subject of this page, while the sister code 140 092 (IIC T4, certificate IBExU03ATEX1016 X) is certified for group IIC gases with the exception of acetylene and carbon disulphide, as the footnote states. Installation and safe operation points

• The pump is delivered as a complete system including the Ex e motor, so connection must follow the explosion-protection documents supplied with it.
• Keep the gas inlet temperature at or below 60 degrees C and the ambient between 12 and 40 degrees C; the maximum surface temperature is 135 degrees C, which sets the T4 temperature class.
• The highest permissible pressure in the oil box is 1500 mbar, and the maximum inlet pressure is atmospheric pressure.
• The catalogue drawing shows the connection layout: G 3/4 inch at the intake and G 1 inch at the pressure side.
• The two pumping speed diagrams in the catalogue (IIB3 T4 and IIC T4) differ, so size the duty point against the curve of the part number you select.

Where it is used

The D 16 B-Ex is meant for chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical processes where the pumped gas or vapour can form an explosive mixture, such as solvent distillation, reactor evacuation, tank vapour handling and laboratory rigs inside classified areas. With 16 m3/h pumping speed and a water vapour tolerance of 25 mbar, it suits pilot units and small process vacuum lines, and the pressure-burst-resistant construction is the point of the product, not the capacity. As always the plant operator must assign zones and gas groups; the pump documentation does not replace a hazardous area assessment.

Selection and installation notes

A vacuum pump is selected from the pumping speed, the ultimate pressure and the gases or vapours it will handle. Use the oil grade the maker names, check the oil level before starting, connect the exhaust to a safe place and fit an oil mist filter where needed, use a trap or filter ahead of the pump for dust and vapour and warm the pump before pumping condensable vapour. Service the oil and filters on the schedule in the manual.
