Description
The Gorman-Rupp 6508A is a 10 x 8 inch solids-handling pump from the 6500 Series, delivering up to 5200 GPM at 358 ft head with 3 inch solids passage. The 6500 Series is based on the technology of the Prime Aire and Prime Aire Plus pumps but omits the priming system, so it is designed for flooded-suction applications where no suction lift is needed.
Why choose it over a self-primer
The manufacturer states the simple design delivers greater efficiency than self-priming alternatives in flooded suction installations. The 6508A is the large-flow, high-head solids model: it can handle sludge loading, scum and dewatering feed, move water in mining wash plants, and serve cooling-tower circuits (the clean-liquid 6500 models are the alternative where no solids are present). Construction features
The pump uses a CD4MCu or ductile iron body, replaceable wear ring, atmospheric vent and dual sight gauges for bearing and seal cavities, plus oversized bearings for longer life. A Smart Scroll discharge locator allows the discharge to be rotated to suit the piping and ordered in a range of positions. A double volute, which the literature says mitigates shaft breakage and extends seal, wear ring and bearing life, is available on models 6506A60-B, 6508A60-B and 6510A60-B.

The 6508A is a large pump, so foundation, baseplate and coupling guard design deserve attention at enquiry stage. The manufacturer offers flex-coupled drive and ReliaSource packaging; for packaged stations the same literature describes controls, valves and enclosures matched to the pump. Provide the NPSH available, liquid temperature and solids content so that the double-volute option or a clean-liquid sibling can be considered.
