Allen-Bradley 5069-OB16 Compact 5000 16-Channel 24V DC Source Output Module
Description
A 16-channel sourcing output module
The Allen-Bradley 5069-OB16 is a 16-channel, 12/24V DC sourcing output module for the Compact 5000 I/O platform. Each channel is rated 0.5 A resistive, with a module limit of 8 A, and all sixteen outputs share one group.
It is a one-slot module that is paired with the sinking input 5069-IB16 in many panels, and like that module it has no terminal block in the box.

Power connections and diagnostics
Unlike the input module, the 5069-OB16 does not draw current from the SA power bus. Even so, it is a DC module and must be installed on a DC SA power bus. Field-side power is supplied through the LA+ and LA- terminals, while the module itself uses 75 mA from MOD power.
Diagnostics listed by Rockwell are no-load detection per channel, output short-circuit, overload and overtemperature detection per channel, reverse voltage protection and field power loss detection on Series B hardware only. Surge capacity is 1 A for 10 ms per point.
Behaviour on faults and leakage
Each output can be set to hold last state, turn on or turn off in program mode, with off as the default. In fault mode the choice can last 1, 2, 5 or 10 seconds or forever, which is the default.
Off-state leakage is below 0.5 mA per point and the minimum on-state current is 1 mA. For small loads the manual suggests a loading resistor of 5.6 kΩ and 0.5 W in parallel when using 24V DC.
Confirm the module type through electronic keying in the programming software, and make sure the combined current of all sixteen loads never exceeds the 8 A limit for the module.
Sizing the outputs and the field supply
Begin with a load list for all sixteen channels. Note the steady current of every solenoid, relay coil, pilot lamp or small contactor the module will drive, then check each one against the 0.5 A per-channel rating and add them up against the 8 A module limit. Remember that the module limit applies to loads that are on at the same time, so a sequence where most outputs energise together needs more care than one where only a few are active at once.
- For inductive loads such as solenoid valves and relay coils, plan suppression at the load according to the Rockwell wiring guidance, so switching transients do not stress the output or disturb neighbouring circuits.
- Choose a 24V DC field supply for the LA+ and LA- terminals with enough capacity for the worst-case simultaneous load, plus a margin for future additions.
- Group loads that belong to the same machine function on the same module where possible, so that a field power loss affects only one area of the process.
- Decide whether the conformal coated 5069-OB16K is a better fit for the installation environment before the order is placed.
Installation and commissioning
Fit the module in its slot on the Compact 5000 bus, then mount the separately ordered spring or screw removable terminal block and land the field wiring. Keep output wiring separated from analog and communication cables, and use ferrules on stranded conductors when screw terminals are chosen. Label each wire with its channel number and destination device.
In the programming software, add the module with the correct catalog number and series, set the electronic keying, and configure the program-mode and fault-mode behaviour of each output to match the safety needs of the machine. During commissioning, force or toggle each output in turn with the machine in a safe state, and confirm that the correct device responds. Check that the no-load and short-circuit diagnostics report as expected by temporarily disconnecting a load on a test channel, if the procedure on site allows it.
Maintenance and fault finding
Use the per-channel diagnostics before reaching for a meter. A no-load fault usually points to a broken wire, a disconnected plug on a solenoid or a failed coil. A short-circuit or overload fault indicates a damaged cable or a load drawing more than expected. If several channels report at the same time, check the field supply and the LA terminals first. Where a small load such as an indicator does not switch off fully, review the leakage guidance and the loading resistor recommendation already described above.
Panel conditions in Oman and the GCC
Compact 5000 modules are packed closely on the rail, and the heat from sixteen outputs running near their rating adds to the temperature inside the panel. In summer, control rooms that lose air conditioning and outdoor panels on pump stations or remote wellheads can become very hot, so check the module operating temperature range in the Rockwell technical data and provide adequate cooling. Seal cable entries to keep out fine dust, which can settle on terminals and the bus connectors. For coastal plants, desalination sites and areas with corrosive gases, the conformal coated variant and a well-sealed enclosure help protect the electronics from humid, salt-laden air.
Documents and ordering
The Compact 5000 technical data 5069-TD001 includes the wiring diagram, functional block diagram and certifications. For a quotation send the 5069-OB16 reference, quantity, series, terminal block type and controller. The variants 5069-OB16K and 5069-OB16F are separate catalog numbers. Confirm the exact catalog number and series before ordering. See PLC & I/O Cards and 5069-L320ER CompactLogix 5380 controller for related items.

About brand
Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.
Allen-Bradley product families listed here
Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.
Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used
ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.
Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need
Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
