Allen-Bradley 5069-FPD Compact 5000 Field Potential Module
Description
A module that starts a new SA power bus in a Compact 5000 system
The Allen-Bradley 5069-FPD is a field potential module. It does not process signals; it creates a new SA (sensor/actuator) power bus part-way along a Compact 5000 row of I/O so that modules on each side can use different field power. The manufacturer requires it whenever AC-type and DC-type modules share a system, or when the SA bus would otherwise carry more than 10 A.
Its field supply accepts either DC from 12/24 V or AC from 120/240 V, with the supply wired to terminals marked DC(+) or L1/AC(+) and DC(-) or L2/N/AC(-) plus an earth ground terminal.

When a 5069-FPD is required
The technical data lists these conditions: AC-type and DC-type modules must be isolated from each other, and a new SA bus is needed if the combined draw would pass 10 A. Compact GuardLogix controllers do not support AC on their SA terminals, so an FPD is the way to provide AC field power to local AC modules in such systems.
Ordering notes
The module needs its own removable terminal block, ordered separately, and the field supply wiring must match the voltage type. Plan the order of modules on the rail so that each group of like-type modules sits to the right of the module that feeds them. Confirm details against the Compact 5000 user manuals before design. The module has a single green status indicator, 2 wire-category power ports, and takes up one position on the DIN rail like any other 5069 module, so allow for it in the rail length and in the module count of the controller.
Because the module draws only 10 mA at 0-32 V DC or 25 mA at 0-240 V AC from SA power, the planning limit is the 10 A passthrough rather than the module itself. Dissipation is a maximum of 4.0 W, and the operating range is 0 to +60 C.
Selection considerations
A field potential module is a planning item rather than a functional one, so the decision to include it is made during the I/O layout. List every module on the rail with its SA power requirement and voltage type, then group like modules together. Wherever AC and DC modules meet, or wherever the running total of SA current would exceed the limit stated above, a 5069-FPD is needed to start a fresh bus. It is also worth adding one where groups of I/O should be powered from separate supplies for maintenance reasons, for example so that outputs feeding one machine section can be de-energised without affecting another. Size each field supply for the modules it serves, with reasonable spare capacity for future expansion.
Installation and commissioning practice
Mount the module on the DIN rail in the position chosen in the layout drawing and install it in the same way as the other 5069 modules on the rail. Wire the field supply to the separately ordered removable terminal block using the terminals that match the supply type, connect the earth ground terminal, and protect the supply circuit with overcurrent protection selected to suit the cable and the passthrough limit. Keep AC field wiring segregated from DC signal wiring in the cabinet ducting, consistent with the wire category of the power ports. During commissioning, check the status indicator, measure the field voltage on the new bus before energising outputs, and confirm that modules on each side of the FPD receive the intended supply.
Integration into Compact 5000 systems
In a typical skid or machine panel, a CompactLogix or Compact GuardLogix controller or an EtherNet/IP adapter heads the rail, followed by digital and analog modules. The FPD lets that one rail serve mixed voltages, such as 24 V DC sensors and AC solenoids or contactor coils, without a second rack. Because it occupies a slot like any other module, include it in the module count, the rail length and the project tree, and annotate the electrical drawings so technicians understand where each SA bus begins.
Panel conditions in the GCC
Control panels in Oman and the Gulf are often installed in hot plant rooms or outdoor enclosures. The module’s operating range applies to the air around the rail inside the cabinet, which can run well above outside air temperature once all I/O and power supplies are dissipating heat. Include the module’s dissipation in the cabinet heat calculation, provide ventilation or cooling where needed, keep dust out with proper door seals, and avoid condensation in humid coastal sites.
What to include in an RFQ
State the catalog number and quantity, and say whether the matching removable terminal block should be quoted alongside. If the FPD forms part of a wider Compact 5000 order, list the other catalog numbers so the configuration can be reviewed as a whole.
A copy of the I/O layout or panel drawing, even a draft, is useful as well, because it shows where each SA bus starts and makes it easier to check that the number of field potential modules in the order matches the design.

About brand
Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.
Allen-Bradley product families listed here
Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.
Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used
ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.
Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need
Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
