Allen-Bradley 5094-IB16 FLEX 5000 16-Point DC Input Module

Description

A 24 V DC input module for the FLEX 5000 platform

The Allen-Bradley 5094-IB16 is the sixteen-point sinking DC input module of the FLEX 5000 I/O family, a design aimed at harsh and extended-temperature installations. The data sheet covers the standard module and the 5094-IB16XT in one table, with an operating range of -40 to +70 C.

Inputs are 12/24 V DC sinking in one group of sixteen, with hardware delay of 98 microseconds plus a user-selectable filter of 0 to 50 ms, timestamping, pulse latching, pattern matching and four events. Loss of field power is detected by a dedicated circuit.

Why choose FLEX 5000

FLEX 5000 uses a separate mounting base and removable terminal base for each module, and the whole family is specified down to -40 C. That suits outdoor cabinets, wellhead and pipeline sites, and desert installations where panels cannot be air-conditioned. The 5094-TB3 and TB3S terminal bases named in the data sheet are made from an orderable mounting base plus RTB combination.

Ordering notes

Mounting bases and removable terminal bases do not ship with the modules and must be purchased for each one: the data lists 5094-MB with 5094-RTB3 or RTB3S, and the XT bases for extreme temperature. Check that your adapter (5094-AENTR or AEN2TR) supports the number of modules you plan. All values should be confirmed against the manufacturer publication.

Where the 5094-IB16 fits in a control system

The 5094-IB16 collects discrete on/off signals from field devices such as limit switches, pressure switches, proximity sensors, push-button stations and auxiliary contacts of motor starters. Because the inputs are sinking, they suit field devices that source current to the input, typically three-wire PNP sensors and dry contacts wired from the field supply. Check the output type of each connected device before the I/O list is finalised, since a sourcing-input requirement would call for a different module.

Timestamping, pulse latching and pattern matching make the module useful beyond simple status reading. Short pulses that a normal scan could miss can be latched, and timestamped inputs help when the sequence of events matters, for example when analysing which trip signal arrived first in a shutdown.

Planning the filter and counter settings

The user-selectable filter lets you balance noise immunity against response. Long field cables in outdoor plants and mechanical contacts that bounce benefit from a longer filter time, while fast sensors on rotating equipment need a shorter setting. The simple counters on the first eight channels can serve basic counting tasks such as pulses from a flow switch or a rotation sensor, but the data sheet states that extended counters are not provided, so applications that need advanced counting should be reviewed against a dedicated counter module.

Wiring and commissioning considerations

All sixteen inputs share one group and there is no isolation between inputs, so plan the field supply and common wiring accordingly. Keep the SA power circuit sized for the full module current and use the loss-of-field-power detection to alarm a failed supply rather than reading it as all inputs off. During commissioning, verify each channel with the I/O status indicators and in the controller tags, and confirm keying settings so that a module of a different type cannot be inserted in the slot by mistake.

How to specify the module in an RFQ

State the catalog number 5094-IB16, or 5094-IB16XT if the extended-temperature version is required, together with the quantity. Because mounting bases and removable terminal bases are ordered separately, list the base and terminal base types you need on the same request, and mention the adapter used in your FLEX 5000 rack. For replacements, a photo of the nameplate of the installed module helps confirm the exact series.

Operating in harsh and remote sites

The wide operating temperature range is one of the main reasons engineers choose FLEX 5000 for remote cabinets. In practice the temperature inside a closed enclosure in direct sun can be much higher than the outside air, so evaluate the surrounding air at the module, not only the site climate data. Allow free space around the modules for heat dissipation, keep field wiring tidy so it does not block airflow, and route input cables away from power cables to reduce interference. Where the site is difficult to reach, the module status and SA power indicators, combined with diagnostics in the controller, help maintenance teams identify a fault before travelling. Planning spare capacity in the I/O list also makes later additions easier without changing the rack layout. For the extended-temperature duty, confirm whether the XT version and XT bases are needed.

About brand

Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Allen-Bradley product families listed here

Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.

Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
