The FEP CC-88A communications processor (IDS CC-88A), order code 160050559, is a module for connecting the IDS 850 telecontrol system to a local network (LAN) and serial communication lines. It runs the coupling protocols that allow the IDS 850 to exchange data with control centres, substations, and other automation systems.

The CC88A can be operated as a ‘pure’ CC88A or in a mode compatible with the previous model CC86A, simplifying migration and spares management for existing installations.

Engineering & Design

The module consists of two boards. The base board contains all operating and display elements, the network, communication, and parameterisation/diagnostic interfaces, the connection to the system bus, part of the memory (SRAM), and a real-time clock (RTC). The daughterboard contains the processor core with an MPC852T PowerPC, the flash and SDRAM memory, and the complete functional logic.

Four serial interfaces are available on which various coupling protocols can run, including IEC 60870-5-101/103 and Modbus Master. The network interface can operate per IEC 60870-5-104 as server and client, or alternatively per IEC 61850 as server and client, covering the standard protocols of modern telecontrol and substation automation.

The processor card is mounted in the IDS backplane and the slot identifier is set on the front switch. The measurement data are transferred on the TCP/IP protocol and the polling interval is configured in the host system. The spare card is exchanged while the station is in operation.

System Integration

Identifying the Correct Module

Record the rack position and all communication parameters from the old card before removal.
Export and save the parameter set from the engineering tool, if the old card is still reachable.
Check that the station firmware and engineering software support the revision being supplied.

Commissioning Checklist

After the module is fitted, commissioning follows the normal telecontrol sequence: load the parameter set, confirm the LAN settings, and then test each coupling link in turn. For IEC 60870-5-104 links, check the IP addresses, common address of ASDU and information object addresses against the signal list agreed with the control centre. For IEC 61850, confirm the SCL configuration and dataset mapping. On the serial ports, verify baud rate, link address and protocol settings for IEC 60870-5-101/103 or Modbus Master devices, and watch the port activity indicators while polling is running.

End-to-End Testing

Point-to-point tests should cover status indications, measurements and commands, with each command confirmed at the substation end before handover. Keep a copy of the final configuration with the station documentation so that a spare card can be prepared quickly in future.

Troubleshooting Tips

No link to the control centre: check network cabling, switch port, IP routing and the redundancy settings of the master.
Serial devices not answering: confirm wiring polarity for RS-485, termination and matching link addresses.
Card not starting correctly: check seating in the rack and review the diagnostic interface for boot messages.
