Plug valve compared with ball and needle valves

A plug valve is the right choice when space is short and the pressure is moderate, and when only on and off positions are needed. A needle valve gives finer flow adjustment; a ball valve usually has a higher Cv. At Cv 0.1 this valve suits very small flows such as analyzer sample lines.

Mind the flow direction. The catalog says that reverse flow is limited to a differential pressure of 150 psig and that throttling in the reverse direction may damage the O-ring. If back flow can happen at higher differential pressure, add a check valve.

Use and care

Operate the valve fully open or fully closed. A partly open plug exposes the O-ring to a high-velocity stream and shortens its life.

Do not exceed the stated pressure when the valve is closed against a cold line that may warm up, as trapped liquid can expand and raise pressure beyond the rating.

Before ordering, write down the tube outside diameter, the wall thickness and the fluid. A 1/8 in. valve is easily blocked by particles, so fit a small filter upstream when the fluid is not clean. For liquids, confirm that the viscosity allows flow through a 0.09 in. orifice at the available pressure drop, because Cv 0.1 passes only a small volume per minute.

After installation, pressure test the connections with an inert gas or liquid at the test pressure given in your plant procedure, and tag the valve with its code so that spare seals can be identified quickly.
