Reliable JL14 and JL17 ESFR Pendent Sprinklers K14.0 and K16.8

Description

The Reliable JL14 and JL17 are Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) pendent sprinklers with nominal K-factors of 14.0 (200 metric) and 16.8 (240 metric). They use a levered fusible alloy solder link in 165 F (74 C) or 212 F (100 C) ratings and are designed to respond quickly to a growing fire and deliver a heavy discharge that suppresses rather than merely controls it. Bulletin 019 (August 2024) lists both models together, with a 175 psi (12 bar) maximum working pressure.

Why use ESFR sprinklers

Reliable describes the JL14 and JL17 as shorter and more compact than other ESFR sprinklers, giving more flexibility in distance from ceilings and obstructions. The smaller deflector and frame make them less susceptible to damage, and the lighter sprinklers passed rough use and abuse listing tests without plastic protectors. FM Approvals classifies both models as quick-response, storage and non-storage sprinklers when used per FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets.

Key features from the bulletin

  • cULus, VdS and LPCB listed as ESFR; FM Approved as quick-response storage and non-storage.
  • Beryllium nickel solder link as thermal sensor; brass alloy frame; bronze cap, load screw and deflector; stainless steel kick spring.
  • Bronze finish; 3/4 in NPT or ISO 7-1 R3/4 (BSPT) threads.
  • FM Approved with the Model S-3 water shield (3-3/4 in, 95 mm) as a pendent intermediate level sprinkler.

Selection and ordering

Specify the sprinkler (JL14 or JL17), the temperature rating (165 F or 212 F) and the end connection (3/4 in NPT or ISO 7-1 R3/4), and optionally the S-3 water shield for threaded sprinklers. Table B shows that coverage area, spacing, ceiling distance, clearance to commodity and storage arrangement are not fixed by the bulletin: they are set by NFPA 13 for NFPA installations or FM Global Data Sheet 2-0 for FM installations, so the system designer must size each project.

Installation and maintenance notes

Hold sprinklers only by the frame arms and apply no force to the link. Use only the Model J1 wrench; others may damage the sprinkler. Sprinklers not tightened to torque may leak. Do not clean with soap, ammonia or other fluids, replace painted or damaged sprinklers, and keep spares in a cabinet because an operated sprinkler cannot be reused. Inspect and maintain to NFPA 25.

Typical applications

ESFR sprinklers protect high-piled warehouse and rack storage of Class I to IV commodities and Group A plastics, as well as rubber tyres and rolled paper, where the design basis allows. Logistics and distribution hubs across the Gulf commonly specify them. Table B of the bulletin lists wet systems only, with 165 F and 212 F ratings under both NFPA and FM Global criteria. Confirm commodity class, roof construction, ceiling slope and approvals with your designer before ordering.

Selection and installation notes

Sprinklers, nozzles and valves are chosen by the system designer from the hazard classification, the coverage, the K-factor, the temperature rating and the pressure the water supply can deliver, and the system must be designed, installed and commissioned by qualified people to the standard and authority rules that apply to the project. Confirm the finish, the orientation, the response type and the temperature rating against the design, use only the wrench the maker specifies, never paint, coat or bend a sprinkler and keep spare sprinklers and a wrench in the cabinet as the rules require. Check the listings and approvals required for the project with the authority before purchase.

Keep a record of the sprinkler type and rating at each location, and protect the units from damage during building work.
