Description
The Swagelok SS-4P4T is a P4T series quarter-turn plug valve. A straight-through flow path, a one-piece 316 stainless steel body and a replaceable PTFE-coated plug give a full-flow, low-torque valve that opens and closes with a 90 degree turn of a directional handle. With 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends, a 0.172 in. (4.4 mm) orifice and a maximum Cv of 1.6, it moves more fluid than a needle valve or toggle valve of the same tube size, and it holds up to 3000 psig (206 bar).

Quarter-turn, straight-through
The plug has a bore that lines up with the ports when the handle is parallel to the flow and closes the path when turned 90 degrees, which gives a clear visual state and a low operating torque. The catalog notes forward-flow throttling is possible but reverse-flow throttling may damage the O-ring, and that differential pressure is limited to 150 psig (10.3 bar) maximum if reverse flow occurs. This is a shutoff valve that can also meter modestly; for tight regulation use a needle valve.
Air flow at 1 psi pressure drop to atmosphere is 6.0 std ft3/min (160 std L/min) and water flow 1.6 U.S. gal/min (6.0 L/min) at the same drop, from the catalog flow table.
Ratings and construction
For 316 stainless steel P4T valves the catalog rates 3000 psig from -10 to 200 F, 2000 psig at 250 F and 1000 psig at 300 to 400 F, assuming PTFE-coated FKM O-rings. The one-piece body, a snap ring and a replaceable plug assembly keep maintenance simple. Handle colors other than dark green are available with BK, BL or RD suffixes, and O-ring options include Kalrez (KZ), PTFE-coated Buna N (TB), ethylene propylene (TE) and neoprene (TN) designators.
Every valve is factory tested for shutoff at 600 psig (41.3 bar), and it is cleaned and packaged to SC-10.
Selecting and ordering
SS is stainless steel, 4 is the tube size, P4T is the plug valve series and no suffix means Swagelok tube fitting ends. SS-4P4T4 changes to 1/4 in. female NPT, SS-4P4T2 to male NPT and SS-4P4T-BL to a blue handle. The 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. sizes use the P6T series with higher Cv. Confirm that the fluid is compatible with the PTFE-coated plug and FKM O-ring.

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
