Brand:

Allen-Bradley 5069-OW16 Compact 5000 Relay Output Module

Description

Sixteen normally open relay outputs in two groups of eight

The Allen-Bradley 5069-OW16 offers sixteen Form A (normally open) relay outputs arranged in two groups of eight. It switches from 5 to 125 V DC and 5 to 264 V AC, each channel being rated 2 A resistive, so a single module can drive mixed-voltage loads such as lamps, small valves, contactors and interface relays.

Series C of the module draws more module power than series A and B (225 mA against 75 mA), and the data sheet distinguishes these series in several lines. Check the series of any module being replaced.

Contact life and protection

The 300,000 resistive and 100,000 inductive cycle ratings assume the loads match the relay table, and the manufacturer advises surge suppressors across external inductive loads to extend life. For load connections the data calls for at least 18 AWG wire rated 105 C. Because the outputs are not fused, each circuit needs its own external protection.

Ordering notes

Relay modules are slower than solid-state ones and are not meant for rapid switching. Use the solid-state 5069-OA16 or OB16 types for fast or frequent operations. The module complies with UKEX/ATEX/IECEx only when used at or below 125 V AC or 30 V DC, which matters for hazardous-area panels. Confirm series and terminal block with the manufacturer data. During commissioning the sixteen yellow/red status indicators make it easy to see which output has closed, and the fault-state setting decides whether a relay holds, opens or closes when the controller stops.

Selecting the 5069-OW16 for a Compact 5000 system

A relay output module is the right choice when outputs must switch a mix of AC and DC loads, when dry contacts are needed for interfacing with other equipment, or when loads are switched occasionally rather than continuously. Before allocating outputs, list every load with its voltage, current and type, and compare them with the relay ratings and pilot duty values in the table. Inductive loads such as contactor coils and solenoid valves shorten contact life more than resistive loads, so they deserve particular attention.

  • Group loads so that each group of eight stays within the maximum current per group, and the whole module within its module limit.
  • Remember there is no channel-to-channel isolation, so plan the commons of each group around the supply voltages you intend to switch.
  • Check the series of the module you need, because module power and off-state behaviour differ between series.
  • For hazardous-area panels, keep switched voltages within the limits stated for UKEX/ATEX/IECEx compliance.

Wiring and commissioning practice

Because the outputs are not fused, size external protection for each circuit to suit the load and wire, and use wire that meets the gauge and temperature rating given in the data. Fit surge suppression across external inductive loads as the manufacturer recommends. Label each relay circuit at the terminal block and in the drawings so maintenance staff can isolate the correct supply quickly.

During commissioning, configure the fault state and fault duration for every point in the controller project, then test each output with its real load connected. Pay particular attention to outputs that drive safety-relevant equipment: decide deliberately whether they should hold, turn on or turn off when the controller leaves run mode, rather than leaving the default without review.

Panel conditions in Oman and the GCC

Compact 5000 I/O is rated for a defined operating temperature and non-condensing humidity, and panels in Gulf industrial sites can approach those limits during summer. Allow for the module power dissipation when calculating panel heat load, keep air paths around the I/O bank clear, and use panel cooling where the room is not conditioned. Fine dust and coastal humidity can affect terminal connections over time, so periodic checks of terminal tightness and cleanliness are worthwhile. Track switching counts on heavily used outputs and compare them with the expected contact life, so that frequently cycled loads can be moved to the solid-state types before the relays wear.

Details to include in an RFQ

Provide the catalog number, required series, quantity and whether the 5069-RTB terminal block is needed. If the module replaces an existing one, mention the series fitted today and the controller it works with, so compatibility of the replacement can be checked before ordering.

About brand

Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Allen-Bradley product families listed here

Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.

Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
