Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 525 25B-D017N104 7.5 kW No-Filter Drive

Description

The unfiltered 7.5 kW PowerFlex 525

The Allen-Bradley 25B-D017N104 is the non-filtered version of the 7.5 kW (10 HP) PowerFlex 525 for 380 to 480 V supplies. The 0 in the emission-class position of the catalog number means the integral EMC filter is not fitted, which lowers the drive loss from 230 W to 221 W and leaves the installer free to use an external filter, an isolation transformer or a plant-wide filtering solution.

Electrically the drive has the same 17.0 A output, Frame C dimensions, embedded EtherNet/IP and Safe Torque Off as the filtered version. Use the 25B-D017N104 where the integral EMC filter is not wanted and an external filter will provide the required EN 61800-3 category.

Why choose the unfiltered drive

An integral filter adds a ground leakage path, which matters on ungrounded distribution systems; the 520-series drive also offers a removable MOV to ground for such systems. The non-filtered version avoids the filter and lets you add a filter that matches the cable length and emission category of the installation. Rockwell notes that external filters provide EN 61800-3 category C1, C2 and C3 compliance for all 520-series ratings.

The protection devices are the same as for the filtered drive: a 100-E26 contactor, a 140MT-D9E-C20 manual motor controller and IEC fuses of 25 to 40 A.

Related catalog numbers

Reading the catalog number: 25B is the PowerFlex 525, D is the 380…480V 3-phase supply, the next group is the output current code, N is the IP20 open enclosure, 1 is the standard interface, and the following digit is the emission class: 1 means an integral EMC filter and 0 means no filter. The last digit 4 is the version.

The filtered 25B-D017N114 and the 5.5 kW 25B-D013N114 use the same Frame C chassis. Non-filtered versions are not available for the 18.5 kW and 22 kW ratings, which exist only as N114 drives.

Where the 25B-D017N104 fits best

A 7.5 kW drive typically runs a mid-sized centrifugal pump, a process fan, a screw conveyor, a mixer or the main axis of a packaging machine. The non-filtered build is attractive to panel builders who supply several drives behind one common filter, to OEMs whose machines go to sites with IT (ungrounded) supply networks, and to projects where long motor cables exceed what an integral filter can handle. Because both duty ratings are 7.5 kW, the same drive covers variable torque and constant torque loads of this size.

Using the control I/O

  • The pulse input up to 100 kHz can take a speed reference from an encoder or a flowmeter pulse signal.
  • Two isolated analog inputs accept a 0 to 10 V potentiometer or a 4 to 20 mA transmitter, for example a pressure transmitter for constant-pressure pumping with the built-in PID loop.
  • The Form A and Form B relays can report run and fault status to a BMS or SCADA panel without a network connection.
  • The analog output can drive a local speed or load meter on the panel door.

Commissioning and maintenance

  • Fit the drive on DIN rail or screw it to the back plate, leaving the clearances given in the user manual above and below the Frame C housing.
  • Size the panel cooling for 221 W per drive plus other heat sources in the enclosure.
  • Configure the basic parameters with the LCD keypad, or pre-load a configuration file through the USB port without mains power.
  • Check the cooling fan and heatsink for dust every few months on dusty sites.
  • Keep a copy of the parameter file so a spare drive can be set up quickly.

Considerations for Oman and Gulf sites

The drive is rated for 50 °C without derating, but an IP20 open drive in a sealed cabinet in summer can exceed that internally, so use panel air conditioning or filtered ventilation in hot plant rooms. Generator-fed and remote sites in the interior sometimes have less stable supply voltage, so check that the voltage stays within the 323 to 528 V input window. If the supply is an unearthed system, the absence of an integral filter is an advantage, and the MOV jumper can be removed as described in the manual.

RFQ checklist

  • Catalog number 25B-D017N104 and quantity.
  • Motor data: power, current, speed and motor type.
  • Supply earthing arrangement and any EMC category to meet.
  • External EMC filter, line reactor or dynamic braking resistor if needed.
  • Communication requirements beyond the embedded EtherNet/IP.

About brand

Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Allen-Bradley product families listed here

Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.

Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
