SICK WT34-B410 Proximity Sensor

Description

The WT34-B410 (SICK part no. 1019229) detects objects against a cluttered background. It belongs to the W34 photoelectric family and uses background suppression, so the cut-off distance, not the brightness of the background, decides whether it switches. The data sheet gives a maximum sensing range of 100 mm … 2,500 mm. The switching output is NPN, PNP with light switching, Dark switching, the supply is 10 V DC … 30 V DC and the connection is Male connector M12, 4-pin.

Background suppression on the W34 housing

Background suppression is a triangulation method: the receiver sees the returning light spot at a position that depends on object distance, and only spots inside the cut-off set at the adjuster switch the output. Mount the sensor so the product passes across the optical axis instead of approaching it head-on, otherwise the target crosses the cut-off line slowly and the output may switch late.

The optics use a LED emitting infrared light with a spot of Ø 80 mm (2,500 mm). Setting is made by potentiometer. Response time is ≤ 500 µs at 1,000 Hz switching frequency.

Type code WT34-B410 and part number 1019229

Ordering by type code alone risks receiving a neighbour from the WT34 family. We therefore work from the part number 1019229 and confirm it against the data sheet; the code WT34-B410 is kept on the page for recognition.

Mounting, wiring and set-up notes for WT34-B410

Electrical supply: 10 V DC … 30 V DC. Environmental limits: IP67 and –40 °C … +60 °C ambient in operation. The body measures 27 mm x 92 mm x 70 mm and weighs 140 g. Current draw is 50 mA. Shield the sensor from direct strong light where the data sheet lists a limit for ambient light, and avoid pointing it at bright windows.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
