Brand:

Kamstrup ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 Ultrasonic Flow Sensor

Description

A wear-free ultrasonic flow sensor for heat and cooling meters

The Kamstrup ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 is a static flow sensor based on bidirectional ultrasonic transit-time measurement, covering qp 0.6 to 100 m³/h. It has no moving parts, so there is nothing to wear, and all measurement and calculation circuits sit on a single board in a compact housing. In threaded sizes up to qp 10 m³/h the sensor body is prepared for a directly mounted temperature sensor (M10x1 connection), which shortens installation in small plant rooms. The sensor is approved as a heat meter sub-assembly under MID 2014/32/EU and is paired with a separate calculator, such as the Kamstrup MULTICAL 603 or MULTICAL 803.

Installation and selection notes

If the sensor feeds equipment other than a MULTICAL calculator, it must be connected through a Pulse Transmitter, and a Pulse Divider is used when the other calculator has a different meter factor. At medium temperatures above 90 °C or below ambient, the calculator and Pulse Transmitter must be wall mounted rather than mounted on the flow sensor. Larger sensors, qp 150 to 1000 m³/h, are covered by the ULTRAFLOW 54 DN150-300 version, and the full range of meters is under Flowmeters.

How the Kamstrup ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 works

The ULTRAFLOW 54 measures flow with ultrasonic transit time. Two transducers send sound pulses with the flow and against it. The pulse that travels with the flow arrives slightly sooner, and the difference in time is proportional to the water velocity. The electronics turn the velocity into volume and send it as pulses to a separate calculator. There are no moving parts in the measuring tube, so nothing wears and the sensor keeps its accuracy over years of heating and cooling duty.

Where the ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 is used

  • Heat meters in district heating substations
  • Cooling meters in chilled water systems
  • Building energy metering and tenant billing
  • Plant rooms where space is tight
  • Systems paired with a MULTICAL calculator

Selection checklist for the ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125

  • Nominal flow qp from 0.6 to 100 m3/h
  • Connection: threaded or flanged, according to size
  • Pressure stage: PN16 or PN25
  • Medium temperature from 15 to 130 degrees C, with flanged meters above 90 degrees C
  • Cable length of 2.5, 5 or 10 m
  • Pulse output and meter factor for the calculator
  • Installation dimension matching the existing pipe
  • Calculator type, such as MULTICAL 603 or 803

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Fit the sensor in the flow or return pipe as the calculator is set. No straight inlet run is needed under EN 1434, and the sensor can be mounted horizontally, vertically or at an angle. Fill the system and bleed the air before reading, because air bubbles disturb ultrasonic measurement. Fit the temperature sensor in the pocket provided, seal the installation, and check the pulse count against the calculator.

ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 materials

Threaded meters use DZR brass and flanged meters use stainless steel, with an EPDM O-ring and a PESU measuring tube.

ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 power and protection

The sensor runs on 3.6 VDC from the calculator, and the flow sensor protection is IP65.

ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 dynamic range

The dynamic range is 100 to 1, so the meter reads accurately from very low flow up to the nominal flow.

Heat meter records for ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125

Keep the serial number, the meter factor and the installation date with the site energy file.

Choosing the right ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 size

Choose the nominal flow from the peak load of the circuit, not only from the pipe diameter, so the meter works in its best range.

About brand

Ultrasonic measurement with no moving parts is the idea behind the flowIQ water meters and ultrasonic energy meters of Kamstrup. The Danish company, founded in 1946 in Skanderborg, makes meters for water, heat and cooling that are read remotely. Seven Star LLC lists the Kamstrup flowIQ water meters and the MULTICAL 403 energy meter, and supplies Kamstrup meters to utilities, district cooling operators and building owners in Oman and the GCC.

Kamstrup meter families on this page

The flowIQ 2200 is an ultrasonic smart water meter for residential, multi-unit and commercial connections. The flowIQ 4200 is the bulk water meter, made in five sizes from DN125 to DN300. The MULTICAL 403 is an ultrasonic thermal energy meter that can be supplied as a heat meter, a cooling meter or a combined heat and cooling meter, with a matched pair of temperature sensors and communication modules.

Ordering Kamstrup meters: what we need

Send the type number from the meter front if you are matching installed units. Otherwise give nominal flow and pipe size, connection type and meter length, heat or cooling service, where the flow sensor sits (supply or return pipe), the temperature sensor type and cable length, and the communication you need, for example wired M-Bus or a radio option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ULTRAFLOW 54 used for?
It is a static ultrasonic flow sensor used primarily as a sub-assembly of a thermal energy meter, together with a separate MULTICAL 603 or MULTICAL 803 calculator and a set of TemperatureSensor 63, in installations where water carries the heat.
How is it connected to the calculator?
With a three-wire pulse cable that both supplies the sensor and returns volume-proportional pulses. The cable can be ordered in 2.5, 5 or 10 m lengths, and a Pulse Transmitter or Cable Extender Box is used for longer distances.
Which sizes are covered?
Nominal flow qp 0.6, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 6, 10, 15, 25, 40, 60 and 100 m3/h, from G3/4B threaded sensors to DN125 flanged sensors.
Does it need straight pipe runs?
The datasheet gives a straight inlet requirement of 0D according to EN 1434, and the sensor can be installed horizontally, vertically or at an angle.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Kamstrup?
No. Seven Star LLC is an independent industrial supplier in Muscat and is not a distributor or agent of Kamstrup. We check the type number against Kamstrup documentation before quoting.
