Cla-Val 60-11 Booster Pump Control Valve with Built-In Check

Description

Starting and stopping a booster pump without pipeline surge

The Cla-Val 60-11 is a pilot-operated valve installed on the discharge of a booster pump to eliminate pipeline surges caused by starting and stopping the pump. The pump starts against a closed valve. When the pump is started, the solenoid control is energized and the valve opens slowly, raising line pressure gradually to full pumping head. At shutdown the solenoid is de-energized and the valve closes slowly while the pump keeps running.

When the valve is fully closed, a limit switch assembly acts as an electrical interlock between valve and pump and releases the pump starter so the pump stops. It uses line pressure for operation, and opening and closing rates are adjusted separately.

Built-in check and power-failure behaviour

The 60-11 is based on the 100-03 Powercheck main valve, which contains a lift-type check valve. Should a power failure occur, the check closes the moment flow stops and prevents reverse flow, regardless of the solenoid or diaphragm position. For best performance of the built-in check, install the valve with the stem vertically up; for a horizontal stem, Cla-Val points to the 60-73, or the 660-73 where a reduced-port valve is needed.

The datasheet recommends a 52-03 Surge Anticipator (652-03 for reduced port) for power-failure protection and the 60-11 data lists the pilot components: CV flow controls, a CSM11-A2-2 solenoid control, an X105LCW switch assembly and a CVS-1 shuttle valve. Flexible conduit should be used for the solenoid and limit switch wiring.

Solenoid, control panel and sizing

The CSM11 solenoid has a general purpose NEMA Type 3 aluminum enclosure with a stainless steel trim, a molded Class A coil and a maximum pressure of 300 psi. At 120 V 60 Hz the datasheet gives 0.575 A holding, 5.1 A inrush and 14.1 ohm coil resistance; other coil voltages from 24 to 440 V (60 Hz) and 110 to 240 V (50 Hz) are tabulated. The manual operation of the solenoid is possible.

For SCADA integration and alarms Cla-Val offers the PC-22D Electronic Pump Control Panel, which sequences the pump and valve through all operating modes. Suggested maximum flow is 300 gpm at 2-1/2 in, 460 gpm at 3 in, 800 gpm at 4 in, 1,800 gpm at 6 in and 3,100 gpm at 8 in. Do not oversize the valve, because that weakens its surge-prevention action. Larger pumps use the Cla-Val 60-19 high capacity version.

How the Cla-Val 60-11 works

The valve sits on the pump discharge. Line pressure acts on a diaphragm in the main valve, and a pilot system sets how it moves. At start the pump runs against a closed valve. The solenoid then lets the valve open slowly, so pressure rises smoothly. At stop the valve closes slowly while the pump still runs.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the 60-11

Install the valve on the pump discharge with the stem vertical for best check performance. Connect the solenoid and the limit switch to the pump starter. Set the opening and closing rates with the flow controls. Test a full start and stop. Clean the pilot strainer at regular intervals.

About brand

Cla-Val is an American manufacturer of automatic control valves, founded in 1936 and headquartered in Costa Mesa, California. The company introduced the industry's first hydraulic actuated globe valve in the late 1930s and today builds hydraulically operated, diaphragm-actuated main valves with pilot control systems for pressure, flow, level and pump control.

Control valve and air valve range

The range is built around the Hytrol 100-01 main valve. Pilot systems on that body create pressure reducing and sustaining valves such as the 90-01 and 92-01, rate of flow valves, solenoid valves, pump control valves, check valves, and altitude and level control valves. Cla-Val also lists air release and vacuum valves and silent or two-door wafer check valves, each with an engineering data sheet that gives sizes, materials and pilot ranges.

Markets and materials

Cla-Val addresses waterworks, fueling, marine, mining and industrial applications. Its data sheets state that valves are manufactured in more than 50 different alloys, with ductile iron, cast steel and bronze as the standard body materials and fusion-bonded epoxy coating as an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Cla-Val 60-11 do?
It is installed on a booster pump discharge to prevent pipeline surges by opening slowly when the pump starts and closing slowly when it stops.
Does it include a check valve?
Yes. The 100-03 Powercheck main valve has a built-in lift-type check that closes the moment flow stops, even on power failure.
How does the pump stop?
A limit switch assembly on the valve acts as an electrical interlock and releases the pump starter once the valve is fully closed.
Can the solenoid be operated manually?
The datasheet lists that the solenoid control can be operated manually.
Which sizes are covered?
2-1/2 to 8 inch (65 to 200 mm). For 10 to 16 inch pumps see the 60-19 high capacity pilot system version.
