Micro Motion 4700 Configurable I/O Coriolis Transmitter
Description
A configurable-I/O Coriolis transmitter with a built-in historian
The Micro Motion 4700 Configurable Inputs and Outputs transmitter runs Micro Motion Coriolis sensors with flexible outputs and diagnostics, delivering multivariable data over HART or Modbus. The datasheet highlights a historian that records upsets and deviations every second for 13.5 days and every five minutes for a year, real-time indication of multiphase flow events, and SIL2/3 capability for single or multiple meters per IEC 61508.

Applications and replacement of older transmitters
The 4700 targets measurement points that need more than a basic transmitter: oil and gas production, midstream gas with gas calibration enhancement, and process points where entrained gas must be flagged. Advanced Phase Measurement reports gas void fraction in limited multiple-phase conditions, and combining it with the Net Oil Computer gives single-well net oil and net water readings. A retrofit adapter exists for replacing a Micro Motion 1700 or 2700, as noted in the manufacturer video library. For the higher-end Micro Motion transmitter see the Micro Motion 5700 Coriolis flow transmitter.
Other details from the datasheet: both configurable channels have reverse polarity protection, so reversing leads on a DC supply does not damage the unit. The universal service port connects a PC through a USB cable. The onboard real-time clock uses a battery that users cannot service or replace, and Micro Motion provides a battery replacement and disposal service. A Smart Wireless THUM adapter can be fitted for WirelessHART.
What to confirm before ordering
- Sensor model and size, and 4-wire or 9-wire connection
- Integral or remote mounting, and housing material
- Output and protocol licenses needed (HART, Modbus, second mA channel)
- Hazardous area approval and any SIL documentation
- Application licenses such as API, concentration or Advanced Phase Measurement
Planning the I/O and licences before ordering
The value of the 4700 comes from its configurable channels, so the I/O plan should be settled before the order code is fixed. List every signal the control system or flow computer needs from the meter: mass or volume flow, density, temperature, totals, alarms and any diagnostic status. Then decide which of these travel as analogue or frequency signals and which can be read digitally over HART or Modbus. Because some communication options and applications are licensed, missing one at order time can mean a later upgrade on a running meter.
- Map each output to a channel and decide whether it should be active or passive to suit the receiving input.
- Agree whether Smart Meter Verification at basic level is enough, or whether the Professional licence is needed for your verification routine.
- Check whether the process calls for API correction, concentration or Advanced Phase Measurement.
- Confirm the sensor family and size fall inside the integral or remote mounting lists.
Installation and commissioning
Choose integral mounting when the sensor location allows easy access and the ambient conditions at the line suit the housing; choose remote mounting when the sensor sits in a hot, cramped or vibrating location and the transmitter is better placed where technicians can reach it. Follow the hazardous-area documentation for the selected approval when routing cables and closing the housing, and keep power, signal and communication wiring separated.
During commissioning, configure the outputs and units, carry out a zero verification under stable, full-line, no-flow conditions as the manufacturer describes, and run a Smart Meter Verification to record a baseline. Check each output at the receiving system, not only at the transmitter, and save the configuration so it can be restored if needed.
Using the diagnostics in Gulf oil and gas service
Many Coriolis meters in Oman and the GCC measure crude, condensate, produced water or gas at remote, hot and dusty well sites. The housing materials, ingress rating and ambient limits listed above should be compared with the real site conditions, including direct sun on the enclosure. Shading the transmitter and keeping cable entries closed and correctly made up help in the long term. The historian is particularly useful in these locations: when an operator reports a flow upset, the one-second data and the multiphase indication can show whether entrained gas or a process change caused it, which reduces unnecessary site visits. Scheduling periodic Smart Meter Verification gives evidence that the meter is still performing without removing it from the line.

About brand
Micro Motion is the Emerson brand for Coriolis flow and density measurement. The company started in Boulder, Colorado, and made the Coriolis effect commercially practical for industrial mass flow metering from 1977. Emerson acquired Micro Motion in 1984, and the meters are still developed and built under the Micro Motion name.
Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists the Micro Motion ELITE CMF400 Coriolis flow and density meter and the compact G-Series, and sources Micro Motion flow meters by complete model code.
Micro Motion company profile
| Founded | Boulder, Colorado, USA; Coriolis meters since 1977 |
|---|---|
| Ownership | Emerson since 1984 |
| Technology | Coriolis mass flow, with density and temperature measured from the same vibrating tubes |

Milestones
- 1977: Micro Motion begins selling Coriolis flowmeters from Boulder, Colorado.
- 1984: Emerson acquires Micro Motion.
Micro Motion meter families
ELITE is the manufacturer's top performance family for flow and density, and the CMF400 is one of its larger line sizes. The G-Series is a newer, very compact family for general duty. Each sensor is paired with a Coriolis transmitter, and the range also includes density and viscosity meters. Liquids, gases and slurries can all be measured, which is why these meters appear in oil and gas, refining, chemical, food and marine service.

Ordering Micro Motion meters: what we need
A Micro Motion sensor and its transmitter each have their own model code and serial number; send both. For a new meter we need the fluid, flow range, density, viscosity, operating pressure and temperature, line size, process connection and rating, wetted material, hazardous area approval, outputs and protocol. Custody transfer duty in the GCC should be stated up front because it changes the approvals and calibration options requested.
