Pump types in this category

  • Centrifugal pumps: end-suction, in-line and ANSI process pumps, API 610 vertical sump pumps and circulators (Grundfos, KSB, Flowserve, Bell & Gossett, Calpeda, WILO).
  • Submersible pumps for wastewater and drainage (Flygt).
  • Gear pumps for oils, lubrication and hydraulic duties (KRACHT).
  • Rotary lobe pumps for viscous and solids-laden media (NETZSCH).
  • Air-operated double diaphragm pumps (Verder).
  • Motor-driven diaphragm metering pumps for chemical dosing (ProMinent).
  • Mechanical seals and barrier fluid (John Crane, Flowserve).

Selecting a pump: duty point, liquid and standard

A centrifugal pump is chosen from its curve, so flow and total head at the duty point come first, followed by the suction conditions. The NPSH available at the pump inlet must exceed the NPSH the pump requires, with margin, or the pump will cavitate. Viscous liquids, low flows at high pressure, shear-sensitive products and accurate dosing point to a positive displacement pump instead. Materials of the casing, impeller and elastomers follow the liquid, its temperature and its solids content.

Standards narrow the choice further. Refinery and hydrocarbon duties usually call for API 610 pumps with API 682 seals. Chemical process pumps are built to ASME B73.1 or ISO 5199, and metering pumps to API 675 where specified. Motors in classified areas need the matching Ex protection.

What to send for a pump quotation

Send the liquid, temperature, viscosity, density and solids content, the flow and head or differential pressure, suction pressure or NPSH available, materials required, seal arrangement, motor voltage and frequency, and area classification. For a replacement pump or spare part, the nameplate data with model and serial number is the best start. We check the selection against the manufacturer documentation and propose the manufacturer’s successor when a model is obsolete.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • Fluid pumped and its temperature
  • Flow rate and head
  • Material of construction
  • Motor power supply
  • Model and serial number, for spare parts
  • Hazardous-area requirement, if any

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use a positive displacement pump instead of a centrifugal pump?
Centrifugal pumps suit thin liquids at medium to high flow, and their flow changes with system pressure. A positive displacement pump moves a fixed volume per revolution or stroke, almost independent of pressure. That makes it the better choice for viscous oils, low flow at high pressure, shear-sensitive or solids-laden products and metering. It always needs a relief valve or other overpressure protection on the discharge side.
What is NPSH and why do you ask for it?
Net positive suction head is the pressure margin above the liquid's vapor pressure at the pump inlet. The system provides NPSH available, and the pump needs NPSH required, which rises with flow. If the available value is not higher than the required value with some margin, vapor bubbles form and collapse in the impeller. This cavitation causes noise, loss of performance and damage.
What is the difference between an ANSI process pump and an API 610 pump?
ANSI pumps follow ASME B73.1, which fixes the external dimensions so that pumps of the same size from different makers are interchangeable. They are used for chemical and general process service. API 610 is the petroleum industry standard and sets heavier requirements for casing design, nozzle loads, bearings, shaft sealing and testing. It is specified for hydrocarbon, high-pressure and high-temperature duties.
How do I identify a spare part or replacement for an existing pump?
Read the nameplate: manufacturer, model or type code, serial number, impeller diameter, and rated flow, head and speed. With the serial number the manufacturer documentation shows the exact build, including materials and the seal type. For a mechanical seal, add shaft diameter, seal chamber dimensions, the pumped liquid and the existing flush plan. Photos of the nameplate and the old part help.
What data is needed for a pump quotation?
Liquid name, temperature, density, viscosity, vapor pressure and solids content, required flow and differential head, suction conditions, casing and wetted materials, seal type, driver details such as voltage, frequency and Ex protection, and the standard the pump must follow. State if you need the bare pump, a pump with motor on a baseplate, or spare parts only.
