DeZURIK BHP High Performance Butterfly Valve

Description

Offset-disc butterfly valve for hydrocarbon, chemical and steam duties

The DeZURIK BHP is a high performance butterfly valve for chemical, hydrocarbon processing, pulp and paper, water and wastewater and HVAC plants. The bulletin says its features have been time-tested for over 55 years and describes a fully supported one-piece shaft with heavy-duty bearings that keep seat and disc aligned for long, trouble-free service.

An offset disc gives an uninterrupted 360 degree sealing surface, lowers seat-to-disc interference and so lowers torque, which lets smaller actuators be specified. Typical duties listed include high temperature service, cryogenic applications, throttling steam control, polymerizing media, process gas, vacuum pump isolation and fire-safe refinery service.

Seat designs and sealing features

Pressure-assisted soft seats in PTFE or reinforced PTFE use a titanium or nickel-chromium back-up ring, so the seal works as well at low pressure and in vacuum as at high pressure. The metal seat is electroless nickel coated and heat treated for Class IV or Class V shutoff without exotic seat alloys, and carries an independent static seal gasket between body, seat and retainer.

The dual seat adds a secondary metal seat that wipes scaling media off the disc edge. With the Fyre-Block option the primary PTFE seat is backed by a 316 stainless seat that still seals if fire has destroyed the soft seat. Lugged bodies allow dead-end service to the full valve rating, and the seat retainer is drilled for API 609 and ASME B16.20 spiral-wound gaskets.

Materials of construction and maintenance

Parameter Specification
Shaft 17-4 PH stainless steel, ASTM A564 Type 630, condition H1150
Seat retainer 316 stainless steel, ASTM A240 Type 316 or ASTM A351 grade CF8M
Metal seat ring 316 stainless steel, ASTM A240 Type 316, condition A
Fasteners Stainless steel ASTM A193 grade B8M, class 1 or 2
Bearing options PTFE fabric with 317 stainless or Hastelloy C backing; solid metal in nickel stainless or 316 stainless

Material selection for the pressure-containing parts is certified per ASME B16.34. Repair is quick: a seat, disc or bearing is replaced by removing the retainer screws and the screw that locks the disc-to-shaft pin, with no welds to remove, no pins to drill out and common fastener sizes throughout. Reduced emissions packing sets keep compression through thermal cycling.

Ordering, packing and actuators

The order code follows style, size, end connection, body, packing, then seat and disc and shaft options. The bulletin prints the example BHP,6,W1,CS,TC,S2-S10-FT-TT*Actuator. Packing choices include PTFE V-Flex (TC), low cycle (TCD) and high cycle (G2D) sets, with live-loaded versions (TCDL and G2DL) and a dual packing chamber with a sniffing port for emission control.

The BHP accepts DeZURIK lever, handwheel, chainwheel, PowerRac cylinder, spring diaphragm and Compak actuators, plus positioners, solenoids, switches and speed controls. Reported repeatability is 0.5 percent of total signal, and the valve was cycled more than one million times in oxygen service with zero leakage.

Applications, standards and documents

The valve is built to API 609, face-to-face to MSS SP-68 and ASME B16.1 where stated, with seat leakage tests to API 598 and FCI 70-2 and ISO 5211 actuator mounting. When specified it is certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 for water duty. As general engineering context, such valves suit gas, steam, condensate and chemical isolation on Gulf refineries, power stations and process plants.

Pick carbon steel only after checking corrosion and temperature against the bulletin. More butterfly valves are listed in the Butterfly Valves category. The attached bulletin 45.00-1 (09/2026) lists materials, Cv data and dimensions; send size, flange rating, seat and actuator data with your RFQ to Seven Star LLC.

Using the BHP in Oman and the GCC

High performance butterfly valves are used in the region’s refineries, petrochemical plants, gas processing plants, power stations and district cooling systems, where an offset disc and lower torque allow smaller actuators than a resilient-seated valve of the same size. Typical duties include cooling water, hydrocarbon lines, steam throttling and utility isolation. In desalination plants, the correct disc, shaft and seat materials are important because of the chloride content of seawater and brine.

Seat choice decides the temperature and shutoff performance, so the seat design should be selected from the full process data rather than only the line size. For hydrocarbon service, check any fire-safe requirement in the project specification. Actuators installed outdoors should have a protection rating and finish suited to heat, dust and coastal humidity, and the operating torque should include a margin for the actual service conditions.
